AbstractThe decision analyst can provide valuable support to the decisionmaking process and, increasingly, the impact of this support is becoming more forceful through the use of decision support software packages available on microcomputers. What are the opportunities for using decision support software and what software is currently available? This paper discusses these questions and outlines the part decision support software can play, its value to the decisionmaker, and some of the pitfalls in practical application.

AbstractSimulation is established as a proven and effective aid to decision-making in business and industry, providing a means of investigation where to experiment on the `real world' would be costly or disruptive. This paper first traces the pioneering developments carried out in simulation by a B.S.C. O.R. team, in particular in:- simulation packages, making model construction sounder and easier,- the use of visual displays to communicate model behaviour as a simulation run progresses,- interactive simulation (`gaming'), involving operational personnel, such as line management and planners, in the simulation process.The paper goes on to describe how the advent of the microprocessor, in desk-top computers and colour graphics, has enabled more power and flexibility to be brought to these areas. It also discusses the further benefits arising from the use of micros in simulation and identifies for comparison the benefits of using a mainframe or mini-computer. The paper also describes how the early development areas have culminated in the FORSSIGHT computer-aided decision-making package.

AbstractFinal year B.Sc. students on the Environmental Studies course at Leicester Polytechnic are required to participate in a simulated planning enquiry, working either as proposers or opposers of a particular scheme. Both groups develop Environmental Impact Assessments with the aid of various models implemented on microcomputers. This paper discusses computing aspects of the exercise and comments on the use of microcomputers by non-computing specialists - in this case students.

AbstractThe word 'database' has gone through the buzzword stage and has gained currency as a term covering a wide range of related facilities and techniques. Its apearance in the microcomputer world has therefore aroused confusion as well as interest. Most products are, however, aids to data management or solutions to some particular set of data management problems. This paper attempts to deal with some of the issues and problems underlying data management on micros and to review some current offerings on the market.

AbstractThe Structured Programming Aid (SPA) is an interactive program generator that allows the user to apply structured programming concepts in the production of Fortran programs that will run `first time'.Originally written by Antonio Rodrigues of Birmingham University for an I.C.L. 1906A mainframe machine, the Structured Programming Aid has now been successfully implemented on an Altos 64k microcomputer, using the CP/M system and twin 8-inch floppy disk drives.A description of the Structured Programming Aid is given, together with the rules for coding in SPA, and example listings.
