摘要:
AbstractThe gas industry faces the problem of a highly seasonal demand for its product. This paper describes an O.R. study into ways of solving this problem. The constraints under which a Gas Board operates are outlined and it is shown that an important factor in containing the peak demand is the availability of large industrial contracts which can be switched to other fuels for short periods, at a few hours' notice. The problem of scheduling these interruptions is discussed and the paper considers the value to the Board of different types and combinations of these interruptible contracts. The results of the study have been used by both the engineering and commercial departments in the Board, and this study has made possible an integrated approach to a complex problem.

摘要:
AbstractThe process by which a London Borough makes decisions relating to its provision and management of council housing is described, and the problems of integrated policy planning in a system of decentralized control stated. Optimality of a housing strategy can only be related to the subjective and political aims of the housing committee, so optimization techniques are replaced by a decision evaluating model. This model has been used by the chairman of the committee and officers of the Borough to take decisions upon the Borough's medium range building plan with adequate recognition of effects upon the financial and social responsibilities of the committee. A critique points out the directions in which the model should be developed, and indications are given of the way in which these developments might be implemented.
