AbstractAn alternative method of producing a doubly constrained trip distribution similar to that of a gravity model is described. This alternative model differs from conventional models in that it has an explicit, though naive, behavioural rationale. It also produces a doubly constrained distribution more rapidly than these conventional models, partly because it involves fewer iterations and partly because each successive iteration involves fewer zones than that preceding it. In the one full-scale test for which data are available, the new model efficiently simulates a survey derived distribution, while tests with hypothetical systems show that it produces a distribution which can be closely identified with that produced by a conventional model.

AbstractA new formulation is proposed for the problem of the optimal phasing out over some time period of a group of similar items of capital equipment. The possibility of hiring items from an external source is explicitly considered, as are policy constraints which restrict the minimum number of items which may be held at any time. Initially formulated as an integer program, the problem is transformed to the familiar transportation form of linear programming.

AbstractThe paper describes a method of analysing decision situations which makes the fullest use of all imperfect information available to the decision-maker. It over-comes the objection of extreme pessimism levelled against the Von Neumann criterion and does not rely upon unrealistic assumptions as does the Laplace criterion.It is suggested that, because of its simple concept and ease of application, it could replace the Savage criterion at present most favoured by businessmen.

AbstractWe wish to site a given number of offices or other service points in a district, so that the mean travelling distance between clients and their nearest office is as low as possible. It is shown that the density of the offices should be proportional to the two-thirds power of the population density. This theoretical result does not take account of local conditions, but it may be made the basis for a study on the ground.

AbstractMost continuous time inventory models which allow for the stochastic nature of demands usually include a delivery lag. This disguises a close link between deterministic and stochastic formulations of the inventory problem. By assuming that there is no delivery lag a stochastic version of the classical economic lot size model is developed. It yields the traditional square root formula where the constant demand term is replaced by mean demand.
