摘要:
AbstractThe paper first considerstacticalallocation problems in the health service (particularly the hospital) field which have been tackled by the mathematical programming approach. Examples of such problem areas are those of hospital admissions scheduling, nurse staff assignment, menu planning and the location of hospitals. However, examples of the successful implementation of such models in the literature have only been found for the area of menu planning.A number of proposed mathematical programming models are discussed for strategic problems which relate to planning the prevention and control of disease or population growth. The paper then outlines and comments on a number of potentially very valuable studies concerned with determining the mix and volume of different types of patients or cases to be given various forms of treatment or care.

The results of the selection of an initial period decision based upon the flexibility criterion, which maximizes the probability of achieving a selected cut-off, are contrasted with those obtained from applying the expected value criterion.

摘要:
AbstractA problem that is often encountered, when using a computer simulation model, is whether it is better to make a single continuous run or to make an equivalent number of independent but shorter runs. It is sometimes suggested that when the quantity of interest is a sample mean then, provided the effects of initial conditions can be neglected, it is better to make independent runs as the variance of the sample mean is then smaller. In this note it is shown that, in general, neglecting initial conditions cannot be justified and that in this case the sample mean has better properties if a single continuous run is made.

AbstractThe conventionally calculated return on assets of a single project or of a firm is often seen as a good performance indicator. However, it has an inherent weakness that can lead to bad decisions in that its calculation depends heavily on the convention used to depreciate assets which is, to a considerable degree, arbitrary. Using asset values generated from a cash flow account of an entire project can improve the situation.

AbstractA method of scheduling machines is presented which incorporates the facility of providing proven optimum solutions for minimum throughput time. The method employs branch and bound procedures and includes a new, job based, bounding procedure which is well suited to the situation where all jobs are not processed by all machines. Comparisons are made with well known bounding procedures and computational experience is reported with examples taken from real applications.

AbstractA necessary ingredient of a practical short-term forecasting system in which the parameters of the demand model are not adaptive is some form of monitoring to detect changes in the demand pattern for which the model is inadequate. There are two major automatic methods currently in use for accomplishing this aim. The present paper compares the performances of these two schemes by the use of simulation and gives tables which may be used as a basis for the selection of a suitable scheme in a variety of situations.

AbstractSequential and concurrent route building methods for planning multiple drop delivery journeys are contrasted, and it is concluded that the former would offer important practical advantages if the quality of the routes could be improved. A new method for vehicle scheduling, based upon sequential generation of vehicle routes, is described in this paper. The possibility of several journeys being made by each vehicle is actively considered, and vehicle utilisation is high in consequence. The Clarke and Wright savings criterion is generalised, and each journey is automatically free from intersections. The method is also computationally efficient as evidenced by a study of the sensitivity with respect to fleet size, of changes in vehicle capacity and a driven distance constraint for a single depot problem with 225 customers.
