AbstractThe general location-allocation problem is identified and discussed. The hierarchical extension of this problem is then shown to be of especial interest. A computational algorithm for heuristic solution of the hierarchical problem is described. This algorithm appears to yield solutions of high quality. Finally a numerical problem is examined.

摘要:
AbstractBy exploiting the relationship between scheduling and sorting, this paper describes a functional heuristic algorithm for seeking a quick and approximate solution to then-job,M-machine flowshop scheduling problem under the assumption that all jobs are processed on all machines in the same order and no passing of jobs is permitted. The proposed functional heuristic algorithm can be executed by hand for reasonably large size problems and yields solutions which are closer to optimal solutions than those obtained by Palmer's slope index algorithm.

AbstractMany large practical combinatorial problems await methods of solution, especially those involving the scheduling of hundreds or thousands of activities. The travelling salesman problem is archetypal and has attracted much attention, yet published rigorous methods can only be applied to problems encompassing tens of cities and approximate methods appear only to have been applied to problems of up to 105 cities. None of these methods offers scope for extension to much larger problems because of rapidly increasing computing requirements.Some approximate, sequential methods and the results of applying them to thirty problems of between 20 and 500 cities are described. In addition, the results of applying one method to ten 2500 city problems are reported; the solutions produced were, on average, 1·28 times the corresponding lower bound. It appears that satisfactory solutions to some large practical problems may be obtained by developing suitable sequential methods.

AbstractAggregate models of the United Kingdom razor blade market are discussed. During one prolonged period when the market was dominated by two major brands, approximately equivalent in terms of quality, price and distribution, a model based on advertising expenditures alone was remarkably accurate at predicting short-term movements of a brand's market share in periods of both growth and decline. An optimum decay rate of advertising effectiveness was identified. The value of consumer promotions could be estimated from the deviations they produced from the model. To cover longer periods and to encompass brands of widely differing qualities and prices a more complex model was necessary. This has been successful in following long-term trends of market shares of all brands and has contributed towards understanding the market structure. It has shed light on the value of a multi-brand policy and has enabled a retrospective evaluation to be made of the effect of a period of production capacity limitation on market share growth.
