AbstractWith limited resources and operating in a rapidly changing environment, universities need to formulate strategies for making the most effective use of these resources. This paper shows how modern portfolio planning concepts can be used for this task. A strategic model is developed for a British university and its use in evaluating existing courses, planning new ones and allocating resources is illustrated.

摘要:
AbstractThe Donaldson model for inventory replenishment is investigated for a general class of increasing demands. In particular, it is shown that the system of reorder times is uniquely specified and well-behaved when the demandf(t) is log-concave, i.e. the derivative of logf(t) is a decreasing function of time. In addition, a numerical procedure is outlined which will produce the set of optimal times at which to re-order, provided the demandf(t) is of sufficiently simple form, for example a simple power law or exponential demand.

摘要:
AbstractThe problem considered is that of the allocation and replenishment of several resources in integer quantities in such a way as to maximize the sum of the returns from activities with concave return functions. All the resources are of the same physical type and each resource has an effectiveness of 0 or 1 against each activity, depending on the geographical locations of the resources and the activities or on other constraints. Solutions with objective values arbitrarily close to the optimal value are generated by the application of resourcewise optimization to an associated problem in continuous variables, and the rounding of a continuous solution to an integer solution according to given rules. The application of other continuous methods is indicated. Some properties of optimal integer solutions are derived.

AbstractUsing a linear programming model for the financial planning of an organization requires the specification of a horizon date and a valuation of the firm at that date. Given perfect information about future opportunities, an exact valuation procedure should lead to the same optimal solution of the model regardless of the choice of horizon date. Even in the absence of perfect information, conventional valuations fall far shorter of this ideal than they need to. It is shown that for a modest increase in the size of the linear programme, better valuations can be achieved and, most importantly, valuations which consider the impact on the value of the firm of post horizon constraints and liabilities as well as post-horizon opportunities.

摘要:
AbstractAn efficient algorithm for solving discounted semi-Markov (Markov-renewal) problems is proposed. The value iteration method of dynamic programming is used in conjunction with a test for non-optimal actions. A non-optimality test for the discounted semi-Markov processes, which is an extension of Hastings and Van Nunens (1976) test for the undiscounted or discounted returns with infinite or finite planning horizon, is used to identify actions which cannot be optimal at the current stage of a discounted semi-Markov process. The test proposed eliminates actions for one or more stages after which they may enter the set of possibly optimal actions, but such re-entries cease as convergence proceeds.

摘要:
AbstractA matrix and submatrix of growth of co-operating enterprises enable fuller investigation of relations between enterprises. They contain relatively important parameters and enable immediate inview into the direct growth of enterprises as well as into their mutual movements. A submatrix of growth represents a general scheme of growth of the ith and jth enterprise and by aid of it, investigations of complex structural relations can be performed. Through the submatrix of growth movements of enterprises can be linked and the following can be investigated: (1) relations of absolute levels of the production of enterprises in different periods, (2) absolute and relative rates of growth of enterprises and (3) direct and indirect elasticities of growth of enterprises. Through these parameters a comparative dynamic and structural analysis of co-operating enterprises can be performed.

AbstractA particular type of distribution problem (bulk transfer of finished product linked with collection of raw materials) is described. A multistage model is proposed, part of which is a special case ofk-elliptic optimization. The coordinate geometry necessary to carry out the analysis of a distribution network is described in detail. This is used in a heuristic to identify feasible regions in two-dimensional Euclidean space. A further heuristic is then developed to optimally locate variable points with respect to those regions.
