AbstractIn this paper, we present the results of a study of real-world applications of O.R./M.S. as seen in journals. Five leading journals in the field are surveyed, and real-world application articles are classified using a two dimensional framework consisting of orientation and decision. The orientation dimension separates strategically oriented applications with long-term implications and tactically oriented applications with medium- and short-term implications. The decision dimension refers to the type of decision in the application-largely structured or largely unstructured. The major O.R./M.S. topics are placed in the resulting four quadrants, and articles published in the four most recent volumes of the five journals are classified. Based on the results of this survey, the thrust and shortcomings of implementation research are discussed. Some measures for enhancing publication of field-based research are also proposed.

AbstractTravel-to-work areas (T.T.W.A.s) are used by the Department of Employment for the reporting of monthly local unemployment statistics. T.T.W.A.s are also used to demarcate those parts of Britain to benefit from the public expenditure on industry under regional policy. The 1984 revision of T.T.W.A. boundaries provided academics with a rare opportunity to help rationalize official statistical areas. This involved the specification of zone-design criteria and the implementation of these in a regionalization methodology. It was found that methods based on the model of local labour market areas yielded the most reasonable set of boundaries. The final methodology is detailed here, together with the actual parameter values used in the analysis that produced the new T.T.W.A.s. The paper ends by considering the implementation of the results, and evaluates the new areas against the old T.T.W.A.s.

AbstractThe effectiveness of a promotional campaign is often exaggerated because managers ignore consumer expectations or lead effects. In a case study, these lead effects are analysed using a system dynamics model, autoregressive time-series analysis and econometric techniques.

AbstractThe paper shows how the technique of dynamic programming was applied to the problem of determining the optimum mix of widths of steel used to‘pack’a transformer coil.The approach enables the designer to specify and vary the number of widths to be incorporated into the design. It transpires that, beyond a relatively small number, the‘coverage’obtained is largely independent of the coil diameter.

AbstractIn this note, we examine the algorithm of Drezner and Wesolowsky for locating a facility with maximin rectilinear distance to a given set of demand points. The concept of the closest-point constraint is introduced as a technique for increasing the efficiency of the algorithm. This potential increase in efficiency is demonstrated by an example.

AbstractThis paper presents a simple yet effective decomposition technique for estimating the empirical constants associated with a conveyance construction cost function. The procedure proposed will self-locate a set of rough estimates for the empirical constants to be estimated, and refine it subsequently based on a univariate optimization algorithm. The procedure presented has been tested against some synthetic data and data obtained from a cost chart. In this computational study, the proposed technique was found to perform fairly well.

AbstractThe discounted recursive least-squares concept of R. G. Brown's adaptive smoothing is extended to the Box-Jenkins models. The D.R.L.S. algorithm is derived for the autoregressive moving-average models. Two important applications of the D.R.L.S. for parameter change detection and adaptive forecasting are presented.

AbstractIn this paper, we analyse a queueing system where the server may take a vacation. The customers arrive at the service facility according to a Poisson process, and are served if the server is available (not on vacation). We consider two models: when the server vacation cycle is independent of and dependent on the number of customers in the system. The infinitesimal generators of the underlying Markov processes have a block tri-diagonal structure, and we provide a matrix geometric solution. When the vacation cycle is independent of the customer queue length, we present a simple load-dependent approximation that is fairly accurate.
