AbstractThe paper describes the method used to ascertain the nature and quantities of industrial wastes arising within a metropolitan county. The analysis centres on the relationship between the nature and size of a firm, and the quantity of waste generated by it. The results have been used as an input to the County Council's Waste Disposal Plan (required under section 2 of the 1974 Control of Pollution Act).

AbstractThe paper presents a case study of methods of allocating a given amount of home help resource between a number of geographical areas within a County Social Services Department. Questionnaires were completed for a sample of clients covering such information as:the type of client,the amount of home help actually received, andthe "ideal" amount of help judged necessary.Various allocations were presented to the decision makers, ranging from the simple assumption that the number of hours provided to each type of client should be the same throughout the County, to more "sophisticated" allocations which took account of such geographical differences as the level of provision of other support services and the current and forecast population structure.Although developed within the context of the home help service, the approach is general enough to be applicable to the allocation of other such services to clients, e.g. home nursing.

AbstractThis paper presents an attempt to make reliable projections of the stock of agricultural tractors in Spain. The approach to be followed is that of fitting a logistic trend to the historical data for the period 1951-1976. A set of possible trend curves is presented and their properties discussed; reasons for choosing the logistic trend are given. Preliminary estimates for the parameters of the logistic are obtained by means of the relatively unsophisticated three point method. Alternative heteroscedasticity assumptions in the data are explored with the help of a non-linear regression. Final estimates are obtained by means of a non-linear optimization algorithm. The influence of economic variables and government policies is traced in the residuals.

AbstractThis paper deals with the multiobjective optimization problems for a standby redundancy system through the application of the Surrogate Worth Trade-off method. A multiobjective mathematical model is formulated and the problem considered is to optimize system reliability, cost weight and volume, for a given mission time, subject to multiple constraints. The preferred solution of the decision maker is obtained by using the Surrogate Worth Trade-off method. An illustrative numerical example is provided to indicate the efficiency of the proposed method.

AbstractA market research survey was conducted using a Disparity test to measure the change in preference for four consumer products, as the products became progressively "worn" through use. The results were analysed to see if the deterioration in average preference for a product was uniformly less than for another product, in order to see if "longer lasting" claims for this product could be made for one of the dimensions measured in the test. By fitting a suitable statistical model to the data using weighted least squares estimation it was possible to infer that it was reasonable to make such a claim for one of the products.

AbstractIn recent years, numerous models have been developed for the analysis of health care systems and facilities. However, for the most part, these models are directed at specific, narrowly defined problem areas or subsystems and do not provide a framework for a comprehensive analysis of a total health care system. Alternatively, Q-GERT, a recently developed network modelling and simulation tool does provide the capability for total health care system analysis. In this paper, the applicability of Q-GERT to health care systems is demonstrated via a description of a network model of a university infirmary. Output from the simulation of the network model provides operating statistics for various system parameters including service times, queue lengths, server utilization, etc. Potential applications of model results are demonstrated and discussed.

AbstractMost motorists involved in an accident will claim from their insurance company only if the cost of repair exceeds a certain amount. In this paper, optimal no-claim limits are determined for a common type of insurance policy, and a simple decision rule which might be used by a motorist is shown to have an expected cost very close to the optimal decision rule.

AbstractThe current assumptions in stock control policies of independent demands and constant lead times are relaxed to include the case of first order autoregressive demand patterns and three different distributions of lead time. It is shown that where there is negative serial correlation, assumption of independence might lead to over provision of stock, whereas in cases of positive correlation the under provision will be very significant. This is aggravated as the expected lead time increases. These effects are illustrated by some numerical results.
