摘要:
AbstractA microcomputer-based simulation model is described which was developed to aid in the planning of future berth requirements at a third-world port. The port handles a variety of incoming and outgoing cargoes, using a mixture of specialized and general berths. Some of the complications of the ship-to-berth allocation rules are described, and how they were modelled. The help that the model provided to the consultants is briefly outlined.

摘要:
AbstractRecent years have seen increasing automation and integration of the manufacturing of foodstuffs in the UK. This paper uses two case studies to describe the principles of simulating such plants. These simulations can be used for designing new plants or for improving the performance of existing plants.

摘要:
AbstractA discrete-event simulation model is being developed to provide information for national and regional health planners about the effect of different treatment policies and practices on the increasing numbers of patients with irreversible kidney failure. The simulation program, written in Pascal using Pascal SIM, describes the activities of individual patients whose progress through treatments depends on their characteristics and treatment history, as well as on treatment availability. Programming techniques have been developed to cope with the multiple scheduling of patient entities and the resultant queue-management problems. In order to provide simulation runs on request, for any population group, appropriate data is selected from the European Dialysis and Transplant Association Registry data base for use in the simulation program. Results are shown on a computer screen while the simulation is running, and are saved for further analysis to provide feedback to the requesting organization.

摘要:
AbstractSimulation and artificial intelligence (AI) can be related in the following ways: the methodological similarities, the actual and potential uses of AI concepts in simulation, expert systems in simulation environments, and the gains for AI when applying ideas from simulation. This paper highlights the personal experiences of the author by discussing, for each of the four above-mentioned areas, a topic or a computer system in which he is directly involved. To highlight the similarities, it will be shown that the three-phase simulation model can be considered as a production-system model. A natural-language understanding system that was used in the definition stage of a simulation project will provide the basis for discussing AI concepts in simulation environments. An expert system used in the development and verification stages will provide an insight into the application of expert systems in simulation modelling. An expert-system development tool which is partially based on simulation techniques will be used to outline the gains for AI.

摘要:
AbstractRecent years have seen a number of attempts to apply both AI methods and AI software tools to the development of both simulations and simulation packages. This paper discusses the motivation behind such work: the increasing need for AI researchers to include simulation in AI systems and use simulation in research, and the need to model intelligent behaviour in OR simulation models. The current research and development effort is reviewed. A system called PROSS (the PROlog Simulation System), constructed to allow the integration of AI methods with traditional discrete simulation, is then briefly presented. It is concluded that AI software tools, and some of the novel approaches to simulation being taken by AI researchers, will have a considerable impact on simulation.

摘要:
AbstractThis paper describes experiments designed to test the feasibility of linking discrete-event simulation models with expert systems. Two microcomputer systems are used: one contains the simulation model, while the other contains the expert system. The paper shows that by linking a simulation model with an expert system, it is possible to use the combination for simulation parameter learning, expert system development and expert system control of a simulation model.

摘要:
AbstractThe development of an interactive simulation program generator which is available on micro and mainframe computers is outlined. The generator forms part of a simulation environment being researched into and constructed by a group of researchers at the London School of Economics. The generated programs are written in Pascal, using a suite of routines which assume a three-phase structure for simulation programs. Experiences of modelling using such a simulation modelling environment are outlined, as well as details of related research and future research plans.

摘要:
AbstractThe needs for automated assistance in the simulation task are undeniable. The size and complexity of current modelling efforts far exceed the bounds considered challenging only a decade ago. A research prototype of a simulation model development environment (SMDE) has been developed to provide an integrated and comprehensive collection of computer-based tools to (1) offer cost-effective, integrated and automated support of model development throughout its entire life cycle, (2) improve the model quality by effectively assisting in the quality assurance of the model, (3) significantly increase the efficiency and productivity of the project team, and (4) substantially decrease the model development time. The prototype SMDE is composed of four layers: (0) hardware and operating system, (1) kernel SMDE, (2) minimal SMDE, and (3) SMDEs. Currently, a SUN 3/160 colour computer workstation and the UNIX operating system constitute layer 0, upon which an advanced prototype SMDE is being developed. The objectives of this paper are to: (1) describe the current state of research on simulation support environments; (2) use the SMDE research prototype as an example for describing concepts and principles employed, experiences gained, and guidelines (potential principles) derived in the design and creation of the prototype; and (3) identify and speculate on future research directions.
