AbstractA materials handling system was required for a projected fabrication works. Detailed time studies were made of overhead cranes handling similar material, and the information thus obtained was analysed, leading to improved understanding of the operation of the cranes and hence to measures for increasing their effectiveness. The same time studies were used as a basis for simulating the materials handling system in the projected works on an English Electric“DEUCE”computer. By simulating various combinations of handling equipment a suitable solution was obtained and is now in successful operation.

AbstractThe supply problem of an integrated oil company comprises the allocation of crude oils to refineries, the calculation of refinery programmes and the transportation of finished products to the market. Formulated in terms of mathematical programming, the problem presents some interesting features from the mathematical viewpoint, but these are dwarfed by problems arising from the sheer size of the model.

AbstractIn this paper the author formulates and derives a discrete traffic counting distribution and a passing rule which lead to bunches of zero or one“fast”vehicle behind a“slow”vehicle.“Slow”vehicles are distributed in a Poisson fashion and, except for those instants at which passing occurs, the constrained or“fast”vehicles follow immediately behind a“slow”one. The counting distribution is a simple example of one in which successive inter-vehicle spacings have the Markov property.

AbstractThis paper considers some of the statistical service, flow and delay problems which arriving aircraft encounter in the glide-path of an airport runway. Mathematical expressions for service time distributions and delays are formulated in terms of the probability distributions of spacings between discharges of the glide-path. In this paper the author also considers some numerical solutions of the average glide-path separation as a function of, the average delay to arriving aircraft,x0, a minimum glide-path separation andλthe average Poisson flow rate of landing aircraft.
