AbstractThis paper indicates that in the current economic climate, linear programming could well be worth reconsidering as a maximizing technique in farm planning. This particularly applies when it is used in conjunction with integer programming, which allows many of L.P.'s problems to be overcome.ADAS procedures for L.P./integer programming are described. Reference is made to a range of models and more detail given on the new Bedfordshire mixed cropping model.An explanation is given as to how ADAS models are used in advisory and promotional work.

摘要:
AbstractMathematical simulation is a technique widely used by agricultural engineers to determine systems interactions, to evaluate technical feasibility, to determine economic feasibility, to design complex structures and to help with managing production. In the past, simulation has been used one level removed from the farmers who manage operation on a day-to-day basis. This is changing.Three completely different types of simulations are presented: (1) a static and deterministic simulation of on-farm ethanol production that models the conversion process and determines economic feasibility; (2) a dynamic and deterministic simulation of maize production, including harvest and drying that is weather dependent; (3) a static and stochastic simulation that uses Monte Carlo techniques to obtain information about strength and performance of glued-laminated beams.We believe that inexpensive computing capability will tremendously increase the use of simulation models, such as the three described, that will help farmers better manage their production systems.

AbstractThe paper describes the development of the Operational Research Group at the National Institute of Agricultural Engineering from its formation in 1969. The initial projects produced some models which are still of use now, notably a linear programme of grass-cutting/grazing and a combine-harvesting model. The projects changed into evaluations of research projects in other departments at the Institute, leading to general models of dairy-cow feeding, forage conservation, machinery costing and an arable-farm model. The projects have evolved now into studies of broader areas which are usually less contentious. Many of the models developed can also aid decision making in agriculture generally, and several are now available from the Group as interactive microcomputer programs.

AbstractThis paper applies a single-facility location model to the distribution network covered by the Brantford, Ontario branch of Thibodeau-Finch Transport Ltd. The model is used to determine whether or not the present terminal location should be maintained for the current demand structure and for a projected demand structure. Optimal locations are obtained for both demand structures using a distance function that is tailored to the actual road network over which the firm's vehicles travel. It is found that the transportation costs associated with the optimal locations are sufficiently close to those with the present location to conclude that Thibodeau-Finch should not consider relocation among its strategic options. The paper includes relevant data for verifying the conclusions drawn in support of the status quo.

AbstractIn this paper, an absorbing Markov chain representing the stocks and flows of undergraduate students in a tertiary education faculty is established.In order to assist faculty planners in achieving specific goals, a direct control model in fixed time is developed that allows a partial specification of the distribution of students within the system based on the concept of stated ratios. The attainment and maintenance of this objective, together with a given system size for each planning period, is attempted through recruitment control, as this is the most appropriate control mechanism in an educational institution. The unique specification of the distributional objective makes for considerable ease of planning.The development of a useful sensitivity analysismodus operandi, along with a new efficient solution algorithm to the direct control model, further enhances its applicability for faculty planning.

AbstractIn this note, an adaptation of PASEB is proposed which can solve multi-objective linear fractional programming problems. PASEB was originally proposed by the author for the solution of multi-objective linear programming problems. The proposed adaptation involves changes to certain computational aspects of PASEB to cope with the presence of fractional objectives in the problem. The changes can be expected to increase the computational requirements of the method and to slow down its speed of convergence, but they do not seriously affect its overall effectiveness.
