摘要:
AbstractThis paper describes a case study concerning the application of simulation to manufacturing capacity planning. Visual interactive models were developed and used to investigate the manufacturing strategy for a particular organization. However, there are several practical difficulties which may arise in using these techniques to support managerial decisions. One of these concerns the meaning of the term‘manufacturing capacity’. This problem was overcome by using a visual interactive version of an established procedure to complement the use of a simulation model.

AbstractA computer program has been developed to assist the routeing of road-sweeping vehicles in a part of the north-west of England. The aim of the study was to develop a method which would specify the route to be followed by each sweeper which minimized the dead distance travelled, subject to constraints on the capacity of the sweeper and the time available in any day. The method had to be flexible so that the effects of changes, such as new vehicles, alterations to the location of tips for detritus, or different frequencies of sweeping could be examined quickly. The paper describes how the design of the heuristic algorithm was influenced by the geography of the area, the computing facilities and the time available to complete the study.

AbstractConsideration is given to a scenario where a fleet of ships, each armed with the same anti-aircraft weapon, is attacked by identical aircraft in line-ahead formation. It is assumed that each aircraft uses its weapon against one ship, but all ships use their weapons against each aircraft as it attacks in turn. A difference equation for the bivariate probability distribution of ship and aircraft casualties is obtained, and some analytic results are derived by decomposition of the problem. Using data from the sinking of the HMSPrince of Walesand HMSRepulsein World War II to estimate parameter values, a numerical solution of the difference equation is provided. A separate method for computing the ultimate or terminal form of the distribution is given.

AbstractDuring the last two decades there has been wide application of goal programming. Despite this popularity, goal programming theories have been extensively criticized. Although some criticism may originate from the valid assessment of goal programming, large portions of the criticism seem to stem from confusions and misconceptions in underlying goal programming theories. In this paper, the origin of critical views on goal programming is uncovered and synthesized, to set the stage for a balanced discussion of the pros and cons of goal programming. Through such a discussion, the critical points are validated and, if necessary, some possible remedies for the weakness of goal programming are sought. Hence, the major intent of this paper is to provide a variety of future research ideas which, it is hoped, lend themselves to the further development and application of goal programming rather than provoking any controversies surrounding goal programming.

AbstractIn this paper we consider two medi-centre location problems. One is them-medi-centre problem in which we add to them-median problem uniform distance constraints. The other problem is the uncapacitated medi-centre facility location problem where we include the fixed costs of establishing the facilities and thus the number of facilities is also a decision variable. For the two problems we present algorithms and discuss computational experience.

AbstractThis paper examines the role of uncertainty and risk in determining the optimal commission rates a company should choose for each product of a salesman's product line. We assume that sales for each product are a stochastic function of the time (sales effort) allocated to that product. When sales are assumed to be deterministic, we achieve optimality when each product's commission is the same fraction of its gross margin. However, we determine here that when sales are stochastic this may no longer be true. Optimality conditions require explicit consideration of the utility function of the salesman and the moments of the sales response function.

AbstractA generalization of the block replacement policy (BRP) is proposed and analysed for a multi-unit system which has the specific multivariate distribution. Under such a policy an operating system is preventively replaced at timeskT(k= 1, 2, 3,...), as in the ordinary BRP, and the replacement of the failed system at failure is not mandatory; instead, a minimal repair to the component of the system can be made. The choice of these two possible actions is based on some random mechanism which is age-dependent. The cost of theith minimal repair of the component at ageydepends on the random partC(y) and the deterministic partCi(y). The aim of the paper is to find the optimal block intervalTwhich minimizes the long-run expected cost per unit time of the policy.
