摘要:
AbstractThis case-based article arose out of a decision tree analysis carried out by the authors in an industrial firm. The company's identity and the actual product manufactured have both been altered for reasons of confidentiality. The various discussions outlined in the case are reported in the same order as they occurred within the firm whilst the problem was originally under study. The work reported was first carried out in 1971 and has been the subject of regular "follow-up" analyses since that date. A much simplified and restricted version of Parts I and II of this case was originally published in two articles appearing in theFinancial Timesduring January 1972.

摘要:
AbstractAn account is given of how an existing distribution structure was examined. Two questions were answered. First, what is the minimum cost solution given that one was starting up a new system? Secondly, what changes are needed to the present structure to obtain the maximum benefit. The steps taken in building simple models to describe the system; and the transition from the answer given to the first question to a programme for implementation are outlined. The proposals were implemented and the savings actually achieved were comparable with those anticipated.

摘要:
AbstractA general description is given of how OR methods have been applied to manpower planning in a large British bank, with particular reference to management succession. The importance of close co-operation with senior management to ensure the success of the work is emphasised. Detailed mathematical formulations of the problems and their solutions are not discussed.

摘要:
AbstractAn outline is given of the main tasks of a computer installed with the objective of improving managerial control of the production aspects of the Company. The function of OR relative to the computer is discussed both in determining the logic to be employed and the degree of "optimization" appropriate.

摘要:
AbstractA first attempt at applying OR techniques and approaches in a fine art printing firm manufacturing greeting cards is reported in this paper. The problem of economic production of cards is formulated and four related methods are presented, the fourth being a probabilistic model with possibly wider applications in the fashion industry

摘要:
AbstractThis paper presents several models for decisions on budget and operational details (price-off and duration) of a sales promotion for consuLmer goods industries and retail sector. The solutions to the one-period problem are generalized using the dynamic programming methods to the more common case of a multi-period-situation. Several special cases of the general dynamic programming model are discussed along with numerical examples. Finally, the ways of utilizing historical data for an ongoing firm for estimating the parameters of the models are presented.

摘要:
AbstractThe problem of locating new facilities with respect to existing facilities is stated as a linear programming problem where inter-facility distances are assumed to be rectangular. The criterion of location is the minimization of the maximum weighted rectangular distance in the system. Linear constraints which (a) limit the new facility locations and (b) enforce upper bounds on the distances between new and existing facilities and between new facilities can be included. The dual programming problem is formulated in order to provide for an efficient solution procedure. It is shown that the duLal variables provide information abouLt the complete range of new facility locations which satisfy the minimax criterion.
