AbstractIn times of increasing world competition and decreasing product life cycles, it is important that an industrial company develops an understanding of the implications for its manufacturing processes and infrastructure of the corporate marketing decisions it is considering. The investment involved in processes, controls and procedures is so substantial that organisations are normally unable to change or even adjust these decisions once they have been introduced. This paper develops concepts and ideas on how to develop a strategic role for manufacturing and gives practical examples of the problems which can result and the alternatives to be pursued as a means of clarifying the important issues to be addressed.

AbstractThis paper describes some of the major findings relating to the management of manufacturing operations which have emerged from survey work originally carried out in conjunction with the British Institute of Management. More detailed follow-up studies are also outlined relating to delivery performance and a particular industrial sector: capital electronics goods. The paper summarises the main results of the original survey based on replies from manufacturing managers in 186 plants (representing 158 companies), relating to the characteristics of the companies surveyed, the personal and career details of the responding managers, the nature of the manufacturing operations carried out in the 186 plants, particularly with regard to customer delivery performance and manufacturing lead times, use of computers and sophisticated techniques in manufacturing, and the control systems used in the initiation of production orders. Finally, calling on data from later studies, an attempt is made to focus attention on the key issues in manufacturing management as they relate to U.K. industrial performance.

AbstractProposed methods of reducing unemployment on a national scale mostly rely on indirect measures of a more or less traditional economic nature to stimulate the economy while simultaneously solving other major problems like inflation and the balance of payments. It is the thesis of this paper that unemployment could be reduced more straightforwardly by making it a primary goal of policy, and that this could be done without a severe impact on the other major macroeconomic problems. The introduction of a properly designed negative income tax scheme is the key first step. The argument is first presented in general terms, followed by a review of relevant earlier studies and then a discussion of the practical problems of applying the theory to the present-day U.K.

AbstractA rigorous, but relatively routine, approach to system description is clearly desirable for the analysis of complex problems. The system description facilities of system dynamics can be reformulated to provide such a procedure, and this paper presents the methods in the context of naval control of a disputed sea area. It is shown that the method can assist in the identification of the more important sub-system problems facing one of the principal actors, at least to the extent of a first working plan. Some surprising results are seen to emerge, and the scope of the method for further quantitative analysis, using the more conventional system simulation facilities of system dynamics, or analyses using other Operational Research methods, is indicated.

AbstractA simple approximate formula for the steady-state average number of customers in the Exk/M/1 queueing system is derived and evaluated. The formula is very accurate: the errors incurred are small and insensitive to the shape of the batch-size distribution and to the values of the parameters involved; in the special case where the batch size has a geometric distribution, the formula appears to be exact.
