AbstractA 3-year part-time comprehensive course in operational research was inaugurated in 1964 by the Rutherford College of Technology and Procter&Gamble Ltd., administration and lecturing being shared between them.The College gained a new post-graduate school and the Company a relatively inexpensive method of increasing the technical competence of its management systems staff. Other industrial organizations in the North-east benefited by being able to train operational research scientists relatively inexpensively.The syllabus is given and experience of the first 3 years' operation is described.

AbstractThe membership of the Operational Research Society at the end of 1967 has been analysed to provide information on the numbers of organizations in different industrial classifications which use operational research. Statistics relating to the size of the activity are also given.

AbstractThis paper is an attempt to specify some of the conditions which would need to be met both in the staffing of a group and in its place in the organization, if operational research is to play a part in initiating change in the processes of decision-making. An analogy is drawn with the "planned change" of the behavioural sciences.The conflict inherent in the role is identified. To illustrate the kinds of insights the group would need to possess, into the structure of an organization, and the ways its control systems operate, examples of long-, medium- and short-term decision-making are given.Finally, an attempt is made to identify the characteristics which the group would need to possess for success in this innovative role, including its knowledge, attitudes and insights. The relationship between the group and the sponsor of work is discussed, and between the group and the parent organization in general. It is suggested that a participative style of organization would be the most appropriate for effective innovation in the methods of management by this means.

AbstractA simulation experiment is described involving the sequencing of jobs through a hypothetical batch production shop under conditions of variable shop load and route configurations for the jobs. Performance of the system is measured in a number of ways and regression models are presented for the prediction of flow time.

AbstractEvery system, left unto itself, tends towards disorder. Disorder frequently appears in the form of queues-machines, materials or customers waiting for service or waiting to be served. This article suggests a method of measuring disorder, and shows how this may be used in the analysis of complex decision type of systems.

AbstractRepeat-buying habits for relatively frequently bought textile garments have been found to follow systematic patterns. Many of these patterns belong to the NBD/LSD model of repeat-buying which is already known to hold for non-durable household goods. The main exceptions relate to relatively long repurchasing cycles, to an apparent tendency for some garments to be bought two at a time, and to certain measurement biases in the data.

AbstractA mathematical model is developed for a basic single-commodity storage system in which the stock controller is faced with a randomly fluctuating purchase price. High- and low-price periods are defined and a purchasing policy is specified which depends upon both the number of units in storage and the price period in which the system is operating. For the case of random demand the limiting stochastic behaviour of the system is obtained and the cost of operating the system is derived.
