AbstractThe decision-making process involved in the procurement of military weapon systems, although quite critical and complex, still encompasses the basic characteristics of a capital budgeting problem. Given a number of expenditure items and a limited budget, it is desired to procure those weapon systems that will achieve the goals and objectives of the government and/or military in the most efficient manner. Since these objectives are typically numerous and diverse, traditional decision-making techniques are not applicable. As such, integer goal programming is suggested as a technique to be employed to determine the number of military aircraft to be procured, given conflicting expenditure, budget and effectiveness goals. This method is demonstrated via a case example in which the solution results are presented.

AbstractA model is developed to describe the growth of a medical records store subject to rules for microfilming or disposing of record files when they have not been used within a given period of time. Separate projections are given for the number of files in the system and for the volume of file contents. The model allows different microfilm policies to be compared and aids the long term planning of storage facilities.

AbstractThis paper attempts to show that the iterative methods that are used to solve a class of reorder point inventory models can be replaced by some non-iterative method. The method is described in general terms and two sufficient conditions are derived to check if the method applies to a model. As illustrations, two time-weighted backorder models are considered and they are solved for Normal and Gamma leadtime demand by the proposed method. It is observed that some of the computational advantages of the method also carry over to a class of multi-item models.

AbstractThis paper compares the incremental method of valuation and its possible effects on choices analysed through utility theory with similar zero-base valuations. Analysis shows how biases can arise using incremental valuations in situations with decreasing risk aversion. This could be important in certain circumstances, e.g. delegated decision-making in cases where the total value of an organisation is unknown to the decision-maker or difficult to quantify.

AbstractThis paper is concerned with the use of straight-line distances in algorithms concerned with the solution of the vehicle scheduling problem (V.S.P.). An empirical test is carried out to see whether transport operating cost between two points can be estimated from the corresponding straight-line distance, as often assumed in V.S.P. algorithms which have a cost-minimising objective. The use of variance in V.S.P. algorithms is also discussed, especially in relation to travelled times on links and limits on goods vehicle drivers' hours.

AbstractThis paper examines the relative success rates of simple techniques for the solution of 3 x 3 games. It is suggested that examination of a 2 x 2 subgame which does not possess a saddle point is the most likely means of obtaining a first time solution to the original 3 x 3 game.
