AbstractThis paper surveys the turnover of staff in Operational Research groups. It suggest that surveys based on the membership of the Operational Research Society may be misleading as the majority of O.R. scientists do not belong to the Society. The paper gives data on the age range, length of service and qualifications of O.R. scientists in Industry, in Government and in Consulting.

AbstractAs a guide for developing additions to a line of machine tools a model of the "performance space" of competing brands was developed using catalogue specifications of 25 performance related characteristics. A two-stage analytical process, utilizing cluster analysis and non-metric multidimensional scaling, yielded five- and three-dimensional solutions, in which the axes of the spaces were summary measures of performance. Brands which had similar performance characteristics, in the sense that they could perform similar types of operations, were located "close" to each other in these spaces. The techniques illustrated are quite general and can be applied in a variety of situations, even if (interval scaled) "measured" performance data are not available.

AbstractThis paper describes computer simulation models of the utilization of shared resources by two E.N.T. consultants and two ophthalmology consultants in an English hospital. The resources in question are the hospital beds used by their patients, which are in the same wards, and the operating theatre, whose use they share.The validity of the models in relation to the actual system studied is assessed and experiments are described which evaluate alternative arrangements for the use of these resources.The models are discussed both as part of a continuing programme of research into hospital decision-making and as tools aiding the evaluation of the options open to hospital staff faced with a specific problem.

AbstractThe following paper describes a vehicle scheduling computer program developed by the Operational Research Division in co-operation with the Catering Service of the Education Officer's Department. The program deals with multiple collections and "carrying through", different-sized vehicles, time and vehicle size restrictions for collection and delivery points, alternative garages and variable loading and unloading times for each collection and delivery point taking as a criterion the reduction of transport time. Although the program was developed for a specific situation, namely the organization of school meals delivery routes, and the first part of the paper describes the conditions and requirements demanded by the service, which greatly influenced the development of the program, the major part of the paper deals with the program itself, its structure and working. The paper concludes with some results of tests of the program in the southern half of the Inner London Education Authority's area.

AbstractDelays at machines have effects on the timing of input costs as well as on the delivery time of the product. Here we examine a simple model which combines both these effects and represents the inventory decision as a rate of return distribution for each element being produced. A useful concept ofequivalent money leadtimeis introduced and under simple assumptions is employed to produce the above rate of return distribution. The calculation procedure is indicated but this does not appear to be simple, particularly for joint distributions of stage delays. Finally two sets of simulated results are included to demonstrate the convergence of the two cases (captive and non-captive) as the reorder level is increased.

AbstractA complex system developing continuously through time can often be studied by analysing the system at certain moments. These must be related to one another and to the rest of the time through assumptions on how the system changes in the intervening periods.In particular the daily operations of a seasonal industry throughout the year can be represented by a detailed analysis of a small number of "snapshot" days, and interpolation between them to give the other days. Likewise the development of the industry over a period of years can often be adequately represented by studies of several "snapshot" years. The justification and implementation of this approach are given in considerable detail, so that it can be applied to complex linear systems, and others besides.The paper is illustrated by a very simple model of the gas industry.
