摘要:
AbstractThis article is the first of a series in which it is planned to describe and discuss the work of a number of operational research departments in the United Kingdom. Operational research in the Steel Company of Wales is now over 10 years of age, and employs some 60 staff working as a Company function in the two major operating Divisions. It is a general service to management, giving what advice it can on problems which managers themselves consider important. It is characterized by a broadly based, scientific staff, embracing between them a range of techniques, including those of method study. Particular attention is paid to statistics, mathematics and electronic computing, in support of both operational research projects and more technological work. Over the years, the department has achieved an appreciable degree of practical success and its future is attractively bright.

摘要:
AbstractThe purpose of this article is to present a method of calculating optimum re-order levels and quantities for a re-order level stock control system where the criterion of optimality is the minimization of total expected cost. Many solutions to this, and similar, stock control problems exist in the literature; however, most of these incorporate approximations which simplify the mathematics, but give rise to non-optimal solutions for certain values of the basic parameters. The method described here enables optimum policies to be evaluated reasonably quickly for any item for which the basic parameters can be estimated. In the article we give the mathematical formulation and solution of the problem, together with a computing routine which finds optimum policies.

摘要:
AbstractIndustrial processes must often be reset when a critical dimension of the product approaches or exceeds a specified value. This control procedure ensures that specifications remain between predetermined limits, but the resetting operation may be costly and involve loss of production time. Optimal resetting policies are examined for processes which exhibit a linear trend of a variable dimension produced by the process with a known distribution. Optimal policies are discussed for two criteria: (a) maximum rate of production and (b) minimum cost per unit.

摘要:
AbstractThis paper discusses the experience of an operational research group in developing a practical scheme for the control of spares in an organization with many central and subsidiary stores. It covers the development of the scheme from the choice of the method of control to the publication of control tables for use throughout the organization; it is complementary to earlier papers on the methods of cost measurement and the mathematical analysis.Reasons are given for choosing a re-order level scheme rather than a cyclical review scheme, and for using run out costs rather than levels of service. The effect of errors in estimating physical and economic parameters is discussed; in practice not all the parameters need to be considered explicitly. Several modifications made to meet practical objections are described. The paper ends with some comments on possible future developments.
