摘要:
AbstractThe problem under consideration is related to a system consisting of two storage facilities in series. Part of the water reaching the upstream reservoir may be diverted for storage in the downstream facility. However, there is a certain lag between the time when water is released from the upper reservoir and the time when it is available for utilization in the lower one. Thus the vector describing the state of the system at any one time consists of three elements:amount of water stored in the upstream reservoir;amount of water stored in the downstream reservoir;amount of water in transit. An optimum operating policy for the system had to be derived. The method of dynamic programming was applied in the analysis of this problem. The algorithm obtained was programmed for solution on an IBM 7090 digital computer. Optimal policies were obtained for each admissible state of the system.

摘要:
AbstractIn a recent paper,“The dynamics of military combat”, Brackney categorized the types of combat situation into nine separate, clearly defined situations. Another recent paper by Brown,“Theory of combat. The probability of winning”, uses a two-variable recurrence formula to evaluate the probabilities that one side will win on given assumptions. This effectively covered the pair of probabilities for five out of the nine situations. This present paper deals with the generation of the probability distribution of the number of survivors in all nine of these situations on the same assumptions as Brown. Further these distributions are shown to yield the results obtained by Brown as the totals of the two arrays of the complete distribution in the five cases common to both papers.

摘要:
AbstractIn a line production system, if the sequencing at each work station is done according to the times that the jobs are due out of the system then the sequencing is according to what is called the dynamic priority rule. The priorities are dynamic because the longer a job waits in a queue for service, the less the likelihood that a later arrival will precede it. In this paper interest is focused on the equilibrium probability distribution of the time that a job spends in such a system (called the flow time). Reported here are results of simulation studies which suggest a technique for locating these distributions graphically from theoretically derived flow time distributions for a similar system, but in which queue discipline is governed by a first-come, first-served rule.

AbstractA new procedure is described for the computation of a transport problem model which uses each column of the cost matrix in turn and hence is ideally suited to computers with tape storage.

摘要:
AbstractThe multi-index problem can be described as minimizing the cost of moving a set ofpdifferent commodities (k= 1, 2,...,p) fromnorigins (i= 1, 2,...,n) tomdestinations (j= 1, 2,...,m). The equations then give rise to the conditions on the amount of the various types of combination that is available and required. Alternatively, the same set of restrictions arise when a single commodity has to be moved by different methods, e.g. road, rail, sea, canal, air, etc. Similarly the use of intermediate depots may require the use of a multi-index formulation. A third special type of problem where the method can be used is the capacitated transportation problem (each variable has an upper bound).
