AbstractThe use of linear programming to select diets to meet specific nutritional requirements frequently results in an over-supply of certain nutrients. Nutritional balance is difficult to achieve in diets selected by linear programming owing to the complex inter-relationships of the constraints. Goal programming is presented as a method of achieving nutritional balance in selected diets. An example demonstrating the goal programming approach is followed by a report of an application of the technique to the selection from 150 food raw materials to satisfy the daily nutritional requirements of Thais. The nutritional balance of the raw materials selected by goal programming showed a marked improvement over that selected by linear programming.

AbstractIn Britain, the demand for electricity has been observed to rise sharply at the end of popular television programmes. This presents a serious forecasting problem for the Central Electricity Generating Board in the economic scheduling of standby reserve generation. This report provides some insights into the determinants of the problem and a multivariate forecasting aid through regression analyses on television audience measurements.

AbstractIn a public health system, one of the problems is the size of the waiting list for admission to hospital. This research involves establishing a method of analysing the general surgery waiting list problem at hospital and district level. While there are many aspects to such a study, this paper concentrates on a linear programming model to plan the aggregate throughput of the general surgical department. Preliminary results from applying the techniques to actual health districts in the United Kingdom are reported.

AbstractThis article reports a model developed for the U.S. Department of Transportation (D.O.T.) to evaluate the costs and safety benefits of a proposed safety regulation on daylight running lights. Three alternative policies are considered: (A) not to issue the regulation and not to engage in any further investigation; (B) to issue the regulation as soon as possible; (C) to undertake further research and field testing before making a decision. The model does not require the assignment of a specific societal value per highway fatality prevented; rather, it determines for what range of values each of the alternatives (A)-(C) is most preferred. Based on the model, a recommendation was made within D.O.T. to pursue alternative (C).

AbstractThe problem considered is that of transporting passengers from the ground floor to higher floors in a building with a single lift during the morning up-peak when stopping at every desired destination floor would produce an inadequate service. If the number of stops is not to exceed some specified maximum, then dynamic programming algorithms are given which determine the optimum floors to stop at, either for predetermined fixed stops, or for stops that depend on the destination floors of the passengers in the lift on a particular journey. The algorithms are evaluated and compared with others using simulation techniques and shown to be robust under various demand conditions. The potential application to real but inadequate lift systems is briefly discussed.

摘要:
AbstractRisk engineering models for decision making under uncertainty are illustrated by a succession of increasingly complex example applications. The approach is based upon simple arithmetic procedures which are easy to understand and use. Offshore North Sea projects are the basis for the example applications, but the approach has been used in a range of problem environments in the U.K., Canada and U.S.A. The emphasis is a flexible structure for viewing problems which allows modelling at a level of detail and with a degree of quantification tailored to the needs of the context. The concern is gaining useful insight, not model solution optimisation.
