摘要:
The main object of the tests described in the paper was to investigate why a certain carrier-current equipment, protecting a feeder incorporating a considerable length of 132-kV cable, operated incorrectly on a number of occasions during the war, other attempts to locate the trouble having failed. It was considered worth while to pursue this investigation, so far was was practicable, in order to establish whether carrier-current protection was unsuitable for feeders incorporating lengths of cable.During the tests, the following observations and measurements were made:(a) Power-frequency currents and voltages.(b) The behaviour of switchgear when making and breaking large fault-currents at full voltage.(c) General characteristics and appearances of power-system fault arcs.(d) Induction in neighbouring Post Office communication circuits. The test procedure and equipment used embodied certain novel features, and special attention had to be paid to co-ordinating the activities of the large number of observers employed. Whilst the tests yielded the information sought in items (a)–(d), they did not immediately reveal the cause of the incorrect protective-gear operations during the war. Subsequent examination of the test records drew attention to certain unexpected phenomena which were later investigated by further tests. These phenomena are thought to be the cause of the trouble.

摘要:
The paper outlines the constructional and electrical features of a 30-MeV synchrotron. Two types of magnet are described, and theirperformances are compared. Details are given of the accelerating chamber, with its evacuating system, and of the electronic equipment required to control and monitor the machine in operation. The general behaviour is discussed with the help of experimental results. These include the effects of misalignment and disturbance in the magnetic field, gas scattering of the electrons, variations in the injection process, and change in the parameters of the r.f. accelerating field.

摘要:
The principles underlying the design of the 30-MeV synchrotron are described in relation to general design principles for machines up to 400 MeV. The mechanism of operation of electron synchrotrons is described, and formulae are derived for specifying design parameters. Some practical points in the design of synchrotron magnets, accelerating chambers and electronic equipment are then considered. Finally, theradiation characteristics of the machines are described. The paper isillustrated by experiments on the 30-MeV A.E.R.E. synchrotron, and by design data on the 375-MeV Glasgow synchrotron.

摘要:
The paper is complementary to a paper by G.A. Montgomerie and it suggests that the method of algebraic manipulation proposed by Montgomerie may be considerably improved. In Montgomerie's paper, a closed contact is allotted the symbol unity, and an open ontact the symbol zero. Contacts in series are then treated as if additive, while contacts in parallel are treated as if multiplicative. The present paper shows that, if contacts in series are treated as multiplicative and contacts in parallel as additive, a considerable simplification of algebra results, with a concomitant gain in elegance. This usage avoids the necessity for rules such as 1+0 = 0, 1×0 = 1, which are in direct conflict with those of ordinary algebra. Also, many results which according to the original proposal would be obtained only after considerable manipulation are obtainable at sightusing the methods now proposed.
