SUMMARYThe contribution of melanin to the colour of the skin is subject to hormonal regulation. Hormones influence the amount and the distribution of melanin in the epidermis. One mechanism by which hormones can influence the amount of melanin involves changes in the activity of the enzyme tyrosinase in the melanoblasts which synthesize the pigment. A second mechanism may involve changes in the activity of keratinocytes which engulf the melanin discharged from melanoblasts. Hormones can also influence the dispersion of melanin.Interstitial cell‐stimulating hormone, oestrogens, melanocyte‐stimulating hormone and adrenocorticotrophin appear to increase epidermal melanin by enhancing the activity of tyrosinase. Hormones probably exert other effects on epidermal melanin which are less clearly understood.An attempt is made to point out the immediate limitations in our present understanding of the contribution of melanin to the colour of the skin and directions of future investigations are sugges

SUMMARYA series of patients with perioral dermatitis has been studied. All were treated in Sydney, Australia, in the last three years. In general the patients seen have conformed to the pattern described in other parts of the world.The clinical features are sufficiently uniform to suggest that the disorder is a specific entity, but some examples do simulate other better known disorders. These clinical features are described along with the natural history, response to treatment and prognosis.The aetiology is unknown. Various factors which have been incriminated are discussed.

SUMMARYThe judicious use of steroid preparations under polythene film has revolutionized the treatment of chronic psoriasis and other intractable genodermatoses such as atopic eczema.However, occlusive therapy can be tedious and many patients who have established satisfactory control with occlusion become neglectful in its use and suffer disappointing recurrences.There is no suitable alternative treatment for those patients, who must persist with occlusion in order to maintain maximal control of their dermatoses, other than methotrexate and/or oral steroids.It would indeed be ideal if a relatively inexpensive topical steroid could be presented in a base so penetrating that it would obviate the need for occlusion in the management of persistent recurring dermatoses.

SUMMARYA series of 219 patients who died within five years of histological diagnosis of their melanoma is reported. One hundred and fifty‐eight died of melanoma and in three melanoma contributed to death. Male to female ratio was about 2:1 There was a progressive increase of deaths in each cohort in males with aging, but in females only after 60 years of age. Fatal melanomas arose most commonly on the back. Face and thigh lesions were responsible for an approximately equal number of deaths and thigh lesions were shown to have a worse outlook than melanoma of the leg. This series contained a large proportion of patients with melanomas bigger than 2 cm. and of the 13 patients with lesions larger than 3 cm., 10 had metastases on registration with the Queensland Melanoma Project. The presence of only three flat melanomas would indicate a generally better outlook for this type of lesion. Ulceration and bleeding suggested a poor prognosis. The large number of patients (78) who had microscopic evidence of metastases on registration contributed to the poor survival in this series. Of the 78, 30 patients presented with metastatic disease and no primary melanoma was found. The findings from 29 autopsies indicated the ability of melanoma to disseminate widely. SUMMARYInvestigations in New Zealand have shown that animals are an important reservoir of human ringworm. Of 4,328 dermatophytes recovered from human lesions over the six‐year period 1963‐68, 1,579 (36.5%) were considered to be of animal origin–1,254 (29.0% total) Microsporum canis; 189 (4.4% total) Trichophyton erinacei; 86 (2.0% total) Trichophyton mentagrophytes; 46 (1.1%) Trichophyton verrucosum; 2 Microsporum distortum and 2 Trichophyton equinum var. autotrophicum. Human infection with zoophilic dermatophytes was more pronounced in the younger age groups, showed no marked sex distribution, and usually occurred at only a single exposed site on the body. Apart from the M. canis ringworms which occurred mainly between the months February to August (autumn, winter), no marked seasonal variations were observed.Of the 12 dermatophyte species recovered from 1,290 wild, domestic and laboratory animals examined between 1960‐68, only nine were regarded as possessing parasitic properties. These were the zoophilic Microsporum canis, M. distortum, M. nanum, Trichophyton erinacei, T. equinum var. autotrophicum, T. gallinae, T. mentagrophytes, T. verrucosum, and the geophilic M. gypseum. Those regarded as essentially non‐pathogenic were the geophilic M. cookei, T. ajelloi and T. terrestre. Apart from T. mentagrophytes which was recovered from a wide variety of animals, the remaining pathogenic dermatophytes displayed marked host specificities. T. mentagrophytes var. quinckeanum was not isolated from any of the human or animal specimens.It is confirmed that, in New Zealand, animals form an important reservoir of human ringworm.
