SummaryA study of cutaneous melanocytes and dermal changes around non‐melanoma lesions and malignant melanomas in Queensland patients has been undertaken. SummarySweating is a function of the sweat glands which are present in the skin and widely distributed over the general body surface. Sweat is produced as a thermoregulatory response to heat, either from a rise in environmental temperature or endogenously from a rise in body temperature, e.g. during exercise. Evaporation of sweat from the skin causes cooling as long as the environmental humidity is not excessive. Thermoregulatory sweating occurs over the general body surface, while that which is associated with emotional states is seen mainly on the face, palms and feet. However, considerable differences in the sweating pattern, in response to various stimuli, are found between individuals.Sweating is abnormal when either too much (hyperhidrosis) or too little, or none (hypohidrosis or anhidrosis) is produced either generally or in particular regions of the body. Methods for measuring sweat production and the application of these techniques to studying the pathophysiology of the response are also discussed.

SummaryExperience has demonstrated that severe hyperhidrosis, resistant to medical therapy, can be cured permanently by sympathetic denervation of the hands or feet, or by skin excision for axillary problems. The technique and results of these procedures is discussed. The clinical profile is so characteristic that differential diagnosis is not a problem. Whether a condition which is socially embarrassing rather than life threatening warrants surgery, is discussed.

SummaryThe use of iontophoresis for the treatment of plantar palmar and axillary hyperhidrosis with poldine methosulphate 0.5% solution, is simple and reasonably effective long term. Few side effects other than physical discomfort at the time of therapy were noticed in ten patients in the trial.Palmar sweating is controlled better than other sites. As may be expected, plantar or palmar multiple warts are possibly eradicated with loss of hyperhidrosis. The equipment is of low cost, treatment time and frequency short. The procedure is beneficial and less traumatic than surgery, and more effective than internal or external medication for this disorder.

SummaryOf 135 kidney allograft recipients twenty one (15.5%) developed a total of 84 malignant skin tumours from 4 to 115 months after transplantation. Seven of these patients also developed a total of 12 keratoacanthomas. Skin lesions due to viral, fungal and opportunistic organisms were prevalent but serious pyogenic skin infections were not increased.In contrast, of 50 patients on immunosuppressive therapy for glomerulonephritis or collagen diseases, only two had skin tumours; none of which were squamous cell carcinomas.

SummaryCases of severe and chronic dermatitis were surveyed by performing a series of immunological tests. The relationship of IgE levels and the number of positive immediate and delayed tests seems worthy of further study. It is apparent that the diagnosis of chronic dermatitis can no longer be made on purely clinical grounds, but requires the testing of aetiological and host factors.

SummaryClofazimine was administered, over a period of six months, in a dose of 100 mgm per day, to nine patients with discoid lupus erythematosus. There was complete suppression or improvement in every patient but this took up to three months to become evident. The main side effect was a pleasing suntan colour of the skin.
