摘要:
SummaryThe cutaneous circulation, particularly in the hands and feet, has been subjected to extensive investigation, using a variety of techniques. The results from these studies show that humoral and neural influences which operate elsewhere in the body control skin blood flow, the latter being mediated‐ through the sympathetic nervous system.Apart from its nutritive function, the circulation in skin is involved in the control of systemic blood pressure and, probably more important, plays an essential role in man's thermal homeostasi

摘要:
SummaryThe epidermis from six cases of chronic solar dermatosis (three from the face, and three from the neck), has been examined with the electronmicroscope. There is electronmicroscopic evidence of reduced protein and lipid reserves in the keratinocytes, and of decreased keratin formation. These changes are believed to be caused by poor nutrition as a result of the ultraviolet light‐induced changes in the dermis. There is no indication that the keratinocytes. are affected directly by the ultraviolet light. Some melanocytes are large and hyper‐functional, probably due to ultraviolet light stimulation, but many are hypo‐functional with few or no melanosomes, few cellular organelles, and frequently a deeply indented nucleus. It is considered likely that the ultraviolet light filtering ability of the epidermis is reduced in chronic solar dermatosis because there is less keratin in the stratum corneum and many melanocytes are incapable of producing melanin. Therefore, once chronic solar dermatosis is established, it would predispose to the development of ultraviolet light induced ca

摘要:
SummaryA carcinogen in the form of whole tobacco smoke condensate was applied to the skin of a group of human subjects most of whom had suffered from bronchogenic carcinoma. One week later the epidermal density was estimated on the area exposed to the carcinogen and compared with, the density of unexposed epidermis in the same subject. The results showed a, small but apparently significant increase in epidermal density after exposure to the carcinogen.

摘要:
SummaryThe first case of erythropoietic protoporphyria diagnosed in South Australia is presented. The clinical picture is of the “light‐sensitive lipoid proteinosis” type. The diagnosis was considered in 1965 but discarded for lack of biochemical confirmation; it was established by skin biopsy in 1968, and subsequently confirmed by finding fluorescent erythrocytes and increased faecal protoporphyrin. An unusual feature is the' late onset at a

摘要:
SummaryThe author reviews the present position of the use of methotrexate for the treatment of psoriasis in the light of his personal experience and the reports in the literature. It is concluded that this drug has a place when psoriasis which is either physically or psychologically disabling fails to respond to local therapy. With careful management, acute toxic effects should rarely occur, though since this paper was written, some cases of cirrhosis of the liver have been reported. The drug should never be given to patients whose renal function is suspect.
