SUMMARYAn account of the source, processing and composition of chocolate is presented. It is shown that chocolate liquor exhibits two exceptional dietary properties not possessed by any other food. Firstly, its lipid content of over 50% is uniquely stearie‐rich and, secondly, it combines a high lipid content with a significant concentration of xanthine alkaloids. Prepared chocolate possesses a third unusual dietary property, the combination of a high lipid content with a high sugar content. The work of Fulton, Plewig and Kligman (1969) is reviewed and it is suggested that their conclusion, that chocolate did not affect the course of their acne patients, requires revision because their calculations did not make adequate allowance for the dietary properties of chocolate. SUMMARYCertain brands of Chinese herbal preparations, especially those employed for the treatment of bronchial asthma, were found in Singapore to contain toxic amount of inorganic arsenical compounds, and were responsible for 74 recent cases of acute, subacute and chronic poisonings.The majority (92%) of these cases demonstrated cutaneous manifestations, chief of which were generalized hyperpigmentation of the trunk (85%), hyperkeratoses of the palms and soles (65%),‘raindrop’ depigmentation (31%), and hyperhidrosis of the palms and soles (31%). Localized areas of pigmentation on the hands, feet, elbow, neck and face were found in 17 milder cases. Severe cases with long‐standing illness had multiple pigmented keratoses on the trunk and limbs (23%) and five patients (6%) eventually developed cutaneous malignancies in the form of multiple pigmented basal cell carcinomata or Bowen's disease (5%) and one squamous cell carcinoma (1%). Four of the cases also demonstrated multiple visceral cancers affecting the lungs, vocal chord, gallbladder and liver. Uncommon skin lesions found included hypersensitivity rashes (16%), mucous membrane irritation (8%), and alopecia (5%). SUMMARYSix Australian dermatologists agreed to participate in a pilot study on their prescribing habits.The many medicaments they prescribed in their private practices as pharmaceutical benefits under the National Health Act 1953–1973 during the months of October, 1972, and February, 1973, are tabulated and discussed.The preparations most often ordered were classified into groups which included antibiotics, sulphonamides, antihistamines, drugs acting on the nervous system, corticosteroids, fungistatics, antimalarials and topical applications.Apart from the selection of tetracyclines and betamethasone in topical applications, the results are interesting because they show diversity rather than similarity in the approach to dermatological treatment by these six dermatologists.
