SUMMARYAs reported by Finley (1969), this condition is frequently seen in Australia. It is easily diagnosed, rather difficult to treat and its aetiology and pathogenesis awaits elucidation. It is a dermatosis which affects mainly women with its highest incidence between 30 and 45 years of age. Besides the usual typical examples of perioral dermatitis, during the last year we have seen three rather exceptional examples affecting males. From our general experience and an appreciation of the literature on this worldwide disease, we have been prompted to prepare this report and to speculate on the aetiology and pathogenesis of perioral dermatitis.

SUMMARYQuinine is described as one of the treatments used for discoid lupus erythaematosus in older text books but this drug has been supplanted in the last 25 years by synthetic antlmalarials.A trial of quinine bisulphate in eleven patients with this condition has been made, for periods up to two years. Half the patients showed improvement, in one case after failure to respond to other standard methods of treatment. Two patients could not take the drug because of nausea, and others showed no effect, or have been lost to follow‐up.As the side effects of quinine can be severe, this drug should be reserved for use when more conventional treatment is ineffective or is contraindicate

SUMMARYFive cases of lipoid proteinosis have been studied, the largest series to be reported from India. Visceral biopsies were obtained from two of the patients. A battery of histochemical stains was employed with a view to finding the nature of the hyaline substance of lipoid proteinosis. On the basis of the clinical and histological findings observed in these five cases, the authors' views regarding the nature and the pathogenesis of the disease are given.

SUMMARYFour patients with erythropoietic protoporphyria with positive blood screening tests and increased erythrocyte protoporphyrin levels were treated with oral β‐carotene.
