Morphological changes in rabbit VX‐2 tumor and its vascular permeability to ferritin following hyperthermia, radiotherapy and thermoradiotherapy were investigated by light and electron microscopy. Tumors treated by thermoradiotherapy successively showed a decrease in volume compared with those treated by hyperthermia or radiotherapy. Light microscopically, degenerative or necrotic changes progressed more widely in tumors treated by thermoradiotherapy than in those treated by hyperthermia or radiotherapy alone. When vascular permeability to ferritin was examined, an increase in tumor vascular permeability occurred at 1 day after hyperthermia or thermoradiotherapy, and at 3 days after radiotherapy. These results suggest that the early reaction of tumor microvasculature is a factor contributing to delayed cell death in tumors after thermoradiotherapy or hyperthermia. Nonspecific cross‐reacting antigen (NCA) immunoreactivity was localized in normal and neoplastic human tissues using a monoclonal antibody to 55, 90 and 95 kDa molecules of NCA. This was compared to the localization of immunoreactive carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) as demonstrated by polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies. In frozen sections, CEA was localized in normal surface epithelium of the stomach and colon where NCA was only weakly detected. Type 1 and type 2 like pneumocytes were positive for NCA, while CEA was localized only in type 2‐like pneumocytes. CEA and NCA were both demonstrated in ductal cells of frozen pancreatobiliary and mammary tissues. The antigenicity of CEA and NCA in normal tissues was significantly lost after paraffin embedding as compared to frozen sections. NCA was consistently demonstrated in eccrine sweat glands embedded in paraffin. In various tumor tissues, CEA and NCA were colocalized and expression increased sufficiently to be detected in paraffin sections. Adenocarcinomas of the stomach and colon and cystadenocarcinoma of the pancreas, as well as neuroendocrine carcinomas of the lung and thyroid, showed a CEA predominance over NCA. In ductal adenocarcinomas of the pancreas and breast and in cholangiocarcinoma, NCA reactivity was greater than CEA. Keratiniring foci of most squamous cell carcinomas of mucosal origin and some adenocarcinomas equally expressed both. Hepatocellular carcinoma, lobular mammary carcinoma and papillary thyroid carcinoma were positive only with unabsorbed polyclonal antibody which widely recognizes CEA‐related substances. Renal cell carcinoma, prostatic adenocarcinoma, transitional cell carcinoma, anaplastic carcinomas, choriocarcinoma and basal cell carcinomas showed little or no immunoreactivity. Hence the relative ratio of CEA/NCA expression in tumors was dependent on the tissue of origin and histologic type. In the gastric mucosa of Japanese patients, ciliated cells were found in association with intestinal metaplasia. The cells occurred frequently in the pyloric mucosa of nearly half of the cases examined but rarely in the cardiac mucosa of total 12 cases, but never adjacent to the chief cells of gastric glands. The ciliated cells were always found in the basal part of cardiac and pyloric glands, but never in the surface or in the foveolar epithelium. Furthermore, ciliated cells containing a few small mucus granules and simultaneously possessing numerous cilia and basal bodies were noted. Ciliated cells in the gastric mucosa have been found mainly in elderly Japanese patients, but were also observed exceptionally in one Chinese, two Swedes and one American. These ciliated cells are not present in the normal human gastric and intestinal mucosa, and therefore a new term, “ciliated metaplasia”, is proposed for their occurrence. Acta Pathol Jpn 40: 98–106,

CD45 antigen (leukocyte common antigen), a unique and ubiquitous membrane glycoprotein with a molecular mass of about 200 kDa, is expressed on almost all hematopoietic cells except for mature erythrocytes. However, the biological function of this glycoprotein still remains to be resolved. In order to clarify the role of CD45 antigen in hematopoietic cell differentiation and function, its expression on human leukemia lymphoma cell lines was studied by membrane immunofluorescence. Thirty eight established cell lines were analyzed using T29–33, a monoclonal antibody (MoAb) that recognizes the common epitopes of this glycoprotein molecule. Conventional cell marker studies were also carried out on these cell lines to compare their CD45 expression. It was shown that CD45 expression varies among B lineage cells depending on cell differentiation, in contrast to its stable expression on leukemic T cell (6/6, positive) and myeloid (5/5, positive) lineage cell lines. On the other hand, only two out of six histiomonocytoid lineage cell lines were positive. Human T cell leukemia lymphoma virus type I (HTLV‐I) associated T cell lines derived from peripheral blood leukocytes of patients with adult T cell leukernia/ lymphoma (ATL/L) in Japan did not express CD45 on their cell surface. The incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis among pathology workers in Japan is elevated, presumably due to frequent exposure to tubercle bacilli in the work place. To demonstrate the etiological significance of the association between this disease and occupation epidemiologically, a questionnaire survey was performed to assess the incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis among 1,201 pathologists and 1,187 pathology technicians throughout Japan. Pathology department workers other than pathologists and technicians, such as secretaries (n = 207), and workers in university departments of preventive medicine and public health (n = 732) served as control groups. While non‐occupation‐related tuberculosis was found in both departmental groups with nearly equal incidence, the incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis among pathologists and pathology technicians after engagement in their current specialist work was significantly higher than that in the control groups (odds ratio = 6.08–10.98). The incidence of disease among pathology technicians who assisted in autopsies was markedly higher than among those not involved in autopsies (odds ratio = 6.65). This elevated incidence was significantly related to the duration of work in pathology activities, and showed little change over the last decade. These findings indicate that specific environmental conditions in pathology departments, particularly autopsy of cadavers harboring active tuberculosis, constitute a serious occupational hazard. A case of cephalothoracopagus female twins is reported, and the anatomical and pathologic features are described in detail. The central nervous systems were completely double. However, there were three eyeballs, two on the well‐formed face and one in the cranial base, forming a saddle shaped ridge of orbital plates. The latter was supplied by optic nerves of both individuals. On the other hand, there was a single esophagus, stomach and duodenum, but the intestine was shared equally at the jejunum by the two individuals. The larynges, tracheae, lungs, hearts, livers, pancreases, spleens and urogenital organs were also duplicated. A case of true malignant mixed tumor of the submandibular gland is reported. The submandibular tumor, occurring in a 52‐year‐old man, started to grow rapidly after a long history without any change in size. Surgical resection was carried out and the resected tumor measured 5.5 cm with a cut surface showing mixed solid structures. Microscopically, the tumor had both carcinomatous and sarcomatous elements, the former consisting of poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma with squamous cell differentiation and the latter consisting of osteosarcoma with chondrosarcomatous and fibrosarcomatous elements. A remnant of benign pleomorphic adenoma could also be identified. Immunohistochemical study demonstrated keratin and epithelial membrane antigen in the carcinoma cells and vimentin in all elements of the osteosarcoma. A review of the literature shows that unilateral benign salivary gland tumors of different histologic types in a single gland are so rare as to be curiosities, and all of such reported tumors have arisen in the parotid gland. The present paper reports a case of synchronous benign epithelial tumors of different histologic type arising in the palatal minor salivary gland of a 57 year old woman who had first noted palatal swelling about 20 years previously. Pathologically, the lesion was composed of two distinct tumors, pleomorphic adenoma and lumenless trabecular adenoma, which were sharply demarcated from each other by a thin layer of fibrous connective tissue. Foci of tumor cells with cellular atypia were seen in some areas of the pleomorphic adenoma. Malignant salivary gland tumors in children are very rare. This report describes the autopsy of a child with parotid gland cancer. The patient, a 10 month old girl, was admitted to the Nagoya First Red Cross Hospital with facial nerve palsy. lncisional biopsy of a post‐auricular tumor was performed, and undifferentiated carcinoma was diagnosed. The patient died 6 months later of respiratory failure due to pulmonary lymphangitis carcinomatosis. Light and electron microscopic and immunohistochemical examinations of the tumor tissue were performed. The tumor cells were arranged in a medullary, sheet‐like manner. Keratinization or mucus lakes were not observed. PAS‐alcian blue staining demonstrated intracytoplasmic mucus as granules, and also small intercellular droplets of mucus that might otherwise have been unnoticed. Ultrastructurally, some of the tumor cells had tonofilament‐like keratin filaments, and also small hollow spaces bounded by microvilli and containing secretory particles. These were stained by antisera against CEA and keratin. These findings are suggestive of differentiation to mucoepider‐moid carcinoma. A 77‐year‐old man found to have an esophageal polyp underwent polypectomy. Histopathological examination revealed that the polyp consisted of multiple microcystic structures similar to those observed in cystadenoma of the pancreas. This type of tumor is very rare in the esophagus, and is suggested to originate from esophageal glands or remnants from the embryonal state. Acta Pathol Jpn 40: 153–155.
