Chronic liver injury by various toxic agents causes an increase in collagen biosynthetic activity, resulting in deposition of excessive amounts of collagen and rearrangement of the lobular architecture leading to hepatocellular dysfunction and portal hypertension. The authors have developed sandwich enzyme immunoassay for human serum type IV collagen peptide using monoclonal antibody as a marker of fibrogenesis and examined the relationship between the amount of this collagen peptide and hepatic disorders including chronic active hepatitis and liver cirrhosis. Sera from patients with chronic active hepatitis or liver cirrhosis were used after confirmation of the his‐topathological diagnosis. Control sera were obtained from healthy subjects without any serological abnormality in liver function tests. Serum type IV collagen peptide levels were significantly higher in patients with chronic hepatic disorders associated with fibrosis than in healthy subjects. This non‐invasive enzyme immunoassay gave reproducible quantitation, and serum type IV collagen peptide was concluded to be a useful, and reproducible marker for the early detection of fibrogenesis in the liver. Populations of oligodendroglial cells (ODC) visualized by the neuroglial impregnation technique were investigated in demyelinated (A), actively demyelinating (6) and non‐demyelinating (C) zones in both the cerebral and cerebellar white matter of monkeys with active EAE lesions. A marked reduction of the ODC population (P<0.001) was recognized not only in zones A and 6 but also in zone C as compared with those of non sensitized monkeys. Thirty eight cases of primary gastric malignant lymphoma were studied morphologically and immunohistochemically. The Working Formulation was used for classification of non‐Hodgkin's lymphoma (1). The results indicated that 37 cases were non‐Hodgkin's lymphoma while the remaining case was Hodgkin's disease. Thirty‐three cases (89%) of non Hodgkin's lymphoma were considered to be of B cell origin and 2 cases (5%) of histiocytic origin. No case was considered to be of T cell origin. We suggest that the majority of primary gastric malignant lymphomas are derived from follicular center cells, and that gastric plas‐macytoma is not as rare as previously described. Carcinomas of the gallbladder can be grossly divided into two types: carcinoma in adenoma (CIA) and carcinoma without adenoma (CWA). The histogenesis of both types of gallbladder carcinoma (CIA and CWA) was investigated in association with metaplastic changes in 35 early carcinomas larger than 5 mm in diameter and 16 microcar‐cinomas up to 5 mm in largest diameter. In five early ClAs and two micro‐CIAs, the carcinoma was surrounded by the adenoma, and the areas of both carcinoma and adenoma mainly showed gastric‐type metaplasia (GM). On the other hand, 90% of the other 30 early CWAs showed GM and/or intestinal‐type metaplasia (IM) in the tumor, and all of them were surrounded by GM and/or IM. Seven of the other 14 micro‐CWAs showed GM and/or IM in the tumor as well as in the surrounding mucosa, and had non neoplastic metaplastic glands underneath the carcinoma tissue. The remaining seven micro‐CWAs showed no or only mild metaplasia in the tumor and were surrounded by proper mucosa without metaplasia. From these data, it is concluded that carcinoma of CIA possibly arises from adenoma mainly with GM, and that CWA originates either from the upper part of the metaplastic mucosa or from the proper mucosa of the gallbladder. Elastosis in benign and malignant breast lesions was studied by light microscopic immunohistochemistry for elastin and by electron microscopy. Upon immunohistochemical examination for elastin, elastosis, particularly in scirrhous‐type ductal carcinoma, showed two characteristic staining patterns: fibrously and intensely stained elastic fibers and evenly stained elastic masses. Elastic fibers showing increased fibrous staining occurred mainly in the stromal areas, and were considered to be newly formed because they consisted of tannic acid‐positive amorphous components and abundant microfibrils. Evenly stained elastic masses were observed mainly in the periductal areas and showed less intense stainability. These masses consisted of numerous fine amorphous components with plentiful microfibrils. In some regions within these masses, there were condensed accumulations of irregularly arranged small amorphous components associated with only a few microfibrils. These amorphous components had an ill‐defined outline and were occasionally associated with spiralling collagen fibrils and cell debris. On the basis of these findings, the periductal evenly stained elastic masses were thought to be formed by excessive production of elastic fibers and degradation of pre‐existing and newly formed elastic fibers. A study was conducted on two brothers with Jordans' anomaly. Fat containing vacuoles were noticed in all leukocytes of the peripheral blood and cells of the myeloid series including myeloblasts, but the serum lipids showed no abnormalities. However, cells of the erythroid series, megakaryocytes and platelets did not contain these vacuoles. An increase in vacuole number was observed as the leukocytes matured. Histochemically, it was suggested that these vacuoles contained neutral fat based on staining with Sudan III and Nile blue sulfate. Ultra‐structurally, these vacuoles were unassociated with lysosomes or other cell organelles. We report two cases of endometrial stromal sarcoma of low‐grade malignancy (so called endolymphatic stromal myosis) with special emphasis on the histogenesis and mode of invasion. The microscopic and immunohistochemical features of the tumor cells resembled those of endometrial stromal cells. A three‐dimensional reconstruction study of the tumor disclosed that it grew by forming a horn‐ or crown‐like structure between and along the vessels. The tumor then protruded into the vascular lumina with a covering of endothelial cells. Immunohistochemical study showed that the vascular system was not lymphatic but venous. A 42 year old Japanese male, who had been suffering from congestive heart failure and electrocardiographic abnormalities (A V block, intraventricular conduction disturbance, ventricular tachycardia), died after a clinical course of 2 years and 1 month. Macroscopic investigation revealed dilation of the left ventricle and thickening of the right ventricular wall. The unique finding in this case was a circumferential fibrous scar in the median circular layer and outer oblique layer of the left ventricular wall. Biopsy and autopsy materials revealed diffuse loss of myofibrils in the central zone of cardiac muscle fibers, and replacement with aniline blue positive homogeneous material (17–35% of the area of one muscle fiber). Electron microscopy revealed abnormal accumulation of fine filamentous material (7.5–25 nm in diameter), which was immunohisto‐chemically proved to be desmin type intermediate filament. Moreover, sarcoplasmic reticulum like material was detected in the degenerated area. At autopsy, degeneration was detected all over the heart. The ventricular muscle fibers were more severely affected than the atrial muscle fibers. The conduction system was also affected, in some parts more severely than the surrounding ordinary muscle fibers. The pathogenesis of this disorder remains to be clarified. Malignant paraganglioma of the organ of Zuckerkandl (malignant POZ) in a 38 year‐old woman is reported. Ten months before her death, the patient suffered from right shoulder pain. By biopsy of a pathological right humeral fracture, a histological diagnosis of metastatic renal cell carcinoma was initially made. However, autopsy revealed a left retroperitoneal tumor, which was diagnosed as malignant POZ. Upon immunohistochemical examination, tumor cells showed definite positivity for neuronspecific enolase (NSE) and chromogranins, and neurosecretory granules were found electron microscopically. The skeletal system is the most common site for distant metas‐tases of malignant POZ. We were unable to find any previous reports of malignant POZ which were first manifested as humeral metastases, as in the present case. As paraganglioma might be histologically confused with a large variety of neoplasms (e.g. renal cell carcinoma), differential diagnosis of this condition is discussed. Acta Pathol Jpn 39: 274–280,
