摘要:
Assessing the hearing of people with learning difficulties, especially those with profound and multiple learning difficulties, is rarely easy. Their use of hearing, furthermore, may be greatly affected by their well‐being and by environmental factors, and it is difficult for clinical assessment to predict these effects. Staff or carers who work with such clients day by day are well placed to carry out ongoing observation, and to interpret clients' responses. This paper suggests an approach to assessment that does not require expert knowledge of the processes involved in hearing: rather, it requires expert knowledge of the individual who is being assessed. It identifies a range of factors which may affect functional hearing, suggests how their effects may be recorded and considers some of the implications for programme and environmental plannin

摘要:
This study represents the results of a survey conducted within a residential institution for adults with learning disability. The survey reports prevalence rates of stereotyped behaviours in a population of 112 adults with learning disability who were living in a residential complex in the West of Ireland. Of the total population, 57% were observed to engage in some form of stereotyped behaviours. The greater the degree of disability, the more likely an individual was to exhibit stereotypy and the more likely to exhibit multiple forms of stereotypy. Sixty‐four per cent of the survey population who exibited sterotypy exhibited more than one form of stereotypy and, of those who would be classed as severely disabled and who also engaged in stereotypy, 71% exhibited more than one stereotyped behaviour. The survey also indicated that body rocking and complex hand motions were the most frequently observed stereotypies. These results are in close agreement with earlier prevalence studie

摘要:
This article presents a case study of a young man with severe learning difficulties who was presented to the psychology service following an allegation of sexual abuse. It addresses the difficulties in investigating allegations of sexual abuse, particularly in people whose communication skills are very limited. The methodology used and the difficulties in investigating the abuse will be discussed in relation to the research literature reviewed in a previous article (Fenwick, 1994).

摘要:
The weight status of a group of 35 adults with learning disabilities was studied. The group with varying degrees of learning disability, all lived in staffed health authority accommodation. Distribution of Body Mass Index (weight for height) was found to be polarised with greater numbers of both obese and underweight people than would be expected in the general British population. Weight status was clearly linked with level of dependency — the most dependent clients being the most underweight.Factors associated with low weight included assisted feeding, use of soft diets, food regurgitation and immobility. Obesity was linked with drug use — notably anti‐psychotics and sodium valp

摘要:
This paper describes the community resistance to mental handicap facilities in Hong Kong. There is a lack of knowledge for social service agencies to deal with such opposition systematically and in a comprehensive manner. The long‐term and immediate intervention strategies for agencies to tackle community resistance are discusse

摘要:
In this paper we describe an innovatory teaching programme for medical students which is designed to promote more positive images of people with learning disabilities (L.D.). The programme involves small groups of medical students working in partnership with equal numbers of people with L.D. on a specific task of mutual interest. In educational terms, the programme was highly successful; students enjoyed the experience and found it both interesting and relevant to their medical studies. At the end of the programme students had acquired a greater respect for the abilities of people with L.D. and were more positively inclined towards them and their rights as citizens. However, the evidence also suggested that they continued to regard people with L.D. as somehow qualitatively different from non‐handicapped people — less able, more dependent and child

摘要:
This paper describes a collaborative project designed to promote integration, operated between one class in a special school for children with severe learning difficulties and many children in a mainstream primary school, involving, on both sites, structured cross‐school, cross‐ability reciprocal peer tutoring in Makaton and mathematics. Evaluation in cognitive, social and affective domains was carried out employing naturalistic observat

摘要:
The quality of life of teenagers with severe learning disabilities depends a great deal on service help. School‐leaving is a time when crucial decisions have to be taken. Five recent surveys undertaken in different parts of the country show a relatively consistent pattern of satisfaction with educational provision, mixed views about health care, concern about the availability and quality of day care, and little interest in moving into a permanent residential place. Specialist services were praised, but there was little evidence of faith in the quality of future expanded social service provisio
