摘要:
The recognition that people with learning disabilities are particularly vulnerable to sexual abuse is not new. However, only recently has it received much attention. The increased awareness of child sexual abuse within the general population, alongside the recognition that people with learning disabilities have sexual needs and the right to express their sexuality, has pushed the issue of sexual abuse to the forefront. This is the first of two articles which address the issue of sexual abuse in adults with learning disabilities. It reviews current research literature on sexual abuse and focuses on those issues of particular relevance to adults with learning disabilities. The application of these findings to clinical investigations of sexual abuse will be discussed in the second article.

摘要:
This paper compares the costs of alternative forms of residential care for people with a learning difficulty in Scotland. The results suggest that whilst it costs less to care for adults with a severe and profound learning difficulty in hospital, it is cheaper to care for adults with a moderate or mild learning difficulty in the community. Evidence of economies of scale was found in providing care for these latter two groups in the community. Foster care placements were the cheapest form of care for children with a severe and profound learning difficulty. Other research has shown that community based small homes provide a superior quality of care.

摘要:
The parents of 20 children with Down's Syndrome were interviewed to find out if, and how, they had told older siblings the diagnosis. The majority of parents agreed that other children should be told immediately, or as soon as they begin to ask questions about their younger brother or sister. This paper includes some quotes from parents, recalling how they had told siblings.

摘要:
This paper follows up a group of 84 students in a social education centre (SEC) who had been screened and allocated to groups according to their communication needs. Each student was allocated to one of seven clinical groups as follows: preverbal; low comprehension/low expression; social skills; low comprehension/high expression; intelligibility; unplaced; no involvement. It proved possible to review 74 out of the 84 students. Of these 58 (78.3%) were considered to be correctly placed in the first instance. The communication needs of those felt to be incorrectly placed are discussed and alternative suggestions made. The results indicate that a simple question and answer screening schedule completed by key workers and where appropriate, students, can prove an efficient point of departure when introducing a service to a SEC. Such a clearly defined approach was felt to have positive implications both for the care staff and for the service as a whole.

摘要:
This paper reports some findings from a sex education programme run over the last three years. An experimental group is compared with a control group in terms of acquisition of sexual knowledge and the effectiveness of the service is established in those terms. However, the main bulk of this paper is given over to analysis of changes in attitude in clients following a sex education course. These changes in attitude are illustrated in three areas: naivety towards sexual relationships, attitudes towards heterosexual relationships and attitudes towards homosexual relationships. Attitude change is discussed in terms of the effects that they have on the client's life and their relationships with significant others.
