摘要:
A quick clay soil from a site close to the Grande‐Baleine River on the west bank of Hudson Bay has been resedimented artificially. Specimens were formed at salinities of 0.2 and 35 g/L to simulate freshwater and marine environments. Under a consolidation pressure of 50 kPa, the specimens were shown to yield sensitivities from 5 to 26, the highest being for the low‐salinity specimens. The natural sensitivity (as measured with the fall cone) is greater than 300.

摘要:
The effects of water‐wave loading on the pressure and stress distributions within a sandbed are examined experimentally in a laboratory wave tank. Total stresses and pore water pressures are measured directly in the sandbed. A simple, rigid‐bed model capable of predicting stresses and pressures is compared to the data obtained in the test program. The model'combines total stresses with pore water pressures to obtain effective stresses. The results of this study show that wave loadings on a saturated sandbed alter the effective stress state throughout the bed. Cyclic stress ratios are maximum at the sediment‐water interface, and for the test conditions considered, have a maximum value of 0.20, although higher values are possible. Bed displacements are shown to be small, thus verifying the assumption of rigid bed behavior for sand.

摘要:
Total organic carbon content (TOC) and selected geotechnical properties were measured in submarine sediments of the U.S. central east coast and the Mississippi Delta. TOC values in the near‐surface Delta sediments were approximately 1% (dry weight). TOC in surficial sediments from the U.S. east coast outer continental shelf, upper slope, and upper rise was generally less than 1%, but between the upper slope and the upper rise, values ranged from 1 to 3% and exceeded 3% in patches associated with Norfolk and Washington Canyons. TOC displayed positive linear correlations with water content, liquid limit, plastic limit, plasticity index, and the amount (percent) of fine‐grained material. Nevertheless, there appeared to be no strong dependence of geotechnical properties on TOC in these sediments. This was in accord with previously reported studies on terrestrial soils with TOC values of less than 5%. Carbohydrate content was strongly correlated with water content and plasticity index, suggesting that measurement of individual components of the organic material may provide more sensitive indications of the effects of organics on geotechnical properties than measurement of bulk TOC. Selected geotechnical properties and TOC content of U.S. continental margin surficial sediments displayed regional trends related to water depth and morphological setting. These trends are probably related to recent biological, sedimentological, and ocdeanographic processes active on the outer shelf, slope, and rise.

摘要:
When waves propagate over the ocean floor, they induce a change of hydrodynamic pressure, positive under the crest and negative under the trough. These pressure changes may cause shear failure in soft sediments and lead to submarine landslides. This paper presents a general analytical procedure for evaluating the probability of wave‐induced failure in offshore clay sediments. Both the wave and the un‐drained shear strength of clay sediments are considered random. Numerical results of some analyses are also presented.
