摘要:
We built up a multipass amplifier for multiplication of infrared nanosecond pulses based on stimulated Brillouin scattering in acetone. Starting with aQ-switched Nd-doped yttrium aluminium garnet oscillator emitting pulses with less than 5 ns duration, we were able to generate a train of up to five pulses with a pulse shortening. Because only phase-conjugating mirrors have been used, we expect the pulses to have a high transverse homogeneity.

摘要:
A new approach of speckle displacement analysis by phase correlation measurement is described. An optical implementation of the method based on one focal length correlator architecture using a liquid crystal light valve is proposed.

摘要:
The interaction of an atom with the intracavity field of a micromaser will, in general leave the atom-field system in an entangled state. The long cavity lifetime means that the memory of this entanglement can persist and influence the interaction with subsequent atoms. We show how non-local correlations between successive atoms can be induced leading to a violation of Bell's inequality.

摘要:
We present a theoretical model that can be used to determine the output of fibre ring resonators made with birefringent fibre, and with different types of polarization-selective or polarization-insensitive couplers. We derive tolerances for the coupler polarization crosstalk, splice alignment, and input polarization mode purity necessary for optimum operation of each type.

摘要:
Given is a tensor operator generalization for the anisotropic case of the Stokes relations, well known in optics of isotropic media. The generalized relations connect Fresnel's reflection and transmission operators that relate to problems of the ‘direct’ and ‘inverse’ normal incidence of a plane wave on a plane interface of two half-infinite linear homogeneous gyroanisotropic media. Example evaluation of the Fresnel tensor for the case of an interface between a vacuum and an anisotropic optical active medium of class 4 2 2 is given. The evolution solution of tensor Helmholz equation for homogeneous isotropic media is obtained. The solution is represented in such a basis that one of its directions coincides with the propagation direction. It is shown that there is an infinite set of involuntary 2 × 2 matrices Z entering wave inversion for all possible types of polarization. Matrix Z components are found to be connected by relations similar to the Stokes ones.

摘要:
On many occasions observers using telescope and sighting instruments see an image subject to an oscillatory displacement. It is of interest to the designers and users of these optical instruments to know in a quantitative way how such image oscillation will affect overall performance. This paper describes a set of laboratory experiments undertaken in carefully controlled conditions to study this problem in terms of its effect on thecontrast sensitivity functionof observers as they looked through a 10 × telescope at sinusoidal grating targets. The experiments show that observers perform this task surprisingly well, obtaining results that are hard to explain in terms of simple modelling.

摘要:
We have re-examined the vacuum field Rabi oscillations of two interacting (via dipole–dipole interaction) two-level atoms in an ideal cavity. The analytic expression of the spectrum for such a system in the vacuum field is explicitly derived. We find that the symmetry of the spectrum is lost due to nonzero dipole interaction between atoms.

摘要:
We studied Ti in-diffusion as an effect of multipulse laser irradiation, in either visible of ultraviolet (u.v.) spectral ranges, of LiNbO3single-crystalline structures with Ti coatings of two different thicknesses. It is shown that while u.v. (excimer, λ ≈ 308 nm) laser irradiation causes a complete expulsion of the Ti deposit, the visible (ruby, λ ≈ 694·3 nm) laser irradiation at intermediate incident laser fluence (up to ≈ 0·7 J cm−2) promotes efficient Ti in-diffusion from the thin (400 Å width) Ti deposit down to a micrometre range implantation depth.
