摘要:
The theory of the fundamental laser linewidth as expressed by the Schawlow-Townes formula is extended to include the amplification of vacuum field fluctuations as well as spatial hole burning. We give a physical interpretation of the PetermannKfactor and a simple derivation that does not invoke non-orthogonality of cavity modes. Spatial hole burning introduces directional gain and reduces the output intensity, leading to an increase in the laser linewidth and a modifiedKfactor for asymmetric cavities.

摘要:
Spontaneous emission of fluorescence radiation by an atom near the surface of a four-wave mixing phase conjugator is considered. It is shown that the spectral photon distribution consists of two Lorentzians, which have their peaks symmetrically located at the two sides of the pump frequency ¯ω of the nonlinear crystal. With ω0the atomic resonance, the line at 2¯ω−ω0is more than twice as strong as the line at ω0. When the phase-conjugate reflectivity exceeds unity, the temporal photon distribution exhibits nonclassical behaviour. Then, antibunching of photons prevails, and the photon statistics are sub-Poissonian.

摘要:
Theoretical analysis of the Kretschmann configuration for attenuated total reflection experiments shows that near the critical angle the reflectivity is strongly dependent upon the dielectric constants and thickness of a thin absorbing layer on the prism surface. Numerical calculations based on Fresnel's equations illustrate this clearly for thin absorbing films. Using this property of highly absorbing films it has then been possible to determine the optical constants of a thin film of phthalocyanine over the visible region of the spectrum.

It is possible to probe directly the optic dielectric tensor configuration within a thin (about 3·5 μm) smectic layer of a ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) by the propagation of prism-coupled leaky Fabry-Perot optic modes. Incident monochromatic polarized light couples into the resonant modes of the system which are then observed as sharp dips in the reflected signal at specific incident angles. This work has shown that the FLC has an optic tensor profile which is consistent with the chevron formation of the smectic layers observed in X-ray scattering measurements. Also it is shown that under the application of a low d.c. applied field the optic dielectric tensor configuration distorts in a manner consistent with the retention of the chevron structure up to fields of about 106Vm−1.

摘要:
The Kirchhoff double-scatter method for calculating the intensity distribution scattered from a rough surface is extended to dielectric and metal surface materials. The material properties are contained in the Fresnel reflection coefficients only. It is shown that the results agree well with calculations using the exact method for a surface of Gaussian statistics with standard deviation of height σ = 1·93λ and 1/ecorrelation length τ = 5·02λ.

A correlation method for measuring surface roughness is proposed that is based on measurement of the transverse coherence function. The method can be applied to measure both roughness height and pitch. A device is designed that utilizes the method. The lower limit of height measurement is 0·005μm. The method is also applicable to dynamic and disperse systems.

摘要:
A high-reflection band in the short-wavelength region for Herpin-equivalent gradient index layer system was found and analysed numerically. The band shape and edge position are sensitive to the number of steps for which the gradient index layer is divided and the Herpin transfer wavelength. The existence of the band is independent of the index profile. The existence of the band was also experimentally verified.

摘要:
In this paper a general study is made to find out the possibility of obtaining information about a periodic intensity profile from the measurement of the Fourier transform of the time-interval probability (FT-TIP). It is found that information can be obtained for small intensities. FT-TIP is then applied to fluorescence decay spectroscopy and it is shown, by a computer simulation method, that lifetimes can be measured with small errors for very small intensities.
