摘要:
AbstractEvaluated the personality functioning of 51 learning disabled children, who ranged in age from 7 through 11. Significant externality was noted for both males and females. Older children were significantly more external than their younger counterparts. Males were significantly more unintelligent, assertive, impulsive, independent, shrewd and anxiously insecure. Females tended to be unintelligent, submissive, dependent, serious and inhibited. Analyses of sex differences indicated that males were significantly more assertive, impulsive and independent than females.

摘要:
AbstractCompared the utilities of four measures currently used to assess pathological deficit in the ability to experience pleasure (N= 56). The Watson Anhedonia Interview scale was less reliable than the others, but was correlated as often with measures of pleasure‐seeking as they were after correction for attenuation. It was more heavily correlated with measures of psychopathology than the others. The Chapman, Chapman,&Raulin (1976) Social and Physical Anhedonia scales demonstrated superior reliability and more correlations with pleasure‐seeking ratings than the other scales, at least before correction for attenuation. However, their relatively modest relationships with measures of psychopathology suggested that the pleasure‐deficits they measure best may not be as characteristic of psychiatric conditions as that reflected by the Anhedonia Interview. The Zuckerman General Sensation Seeking scale showed less reliability than the Chapman scales and fewer correlations with both pleasure‐seeking and psychopathology than the

摘要:
AbstractUsed a one‐way analysis of covariance design (N= 179) to investigate possible score bias on the MMPI among Blacks and Mexican‐Americans who were receiving Aid to Families with Dependent Children. With education treated as a covariate, no significant differences were found between Black and AngloSs. The Mexican‐American welfare recipients differed from the AngloSs on scales Lie, Masculinity‐Femininity, and Hypomania, and from the BlackSs on scales Lie, K, and Hypomania. The suggestion was made that further attention needs to be paid to the interaction of race with economic and situational va

摘要:
AbstractTested the hypothesis thatSs with elevated MMPI profiles would exhibit qualitatively different word associations from those with normal MMPI profiles. Ninety‐twoSs drawn from introductory psychology classes were placed into one of three groups. The first group (N= 29) had T scores between 45 and 55 on all scales. Group two (N= 26) had T scores greater than 65 on the Sc scale and less than 65 on the PA scale. Group three (N= 37) had elevations on the SC and PA scales high enough to exceed a cut‐off value of 5 on Sines and Silver's (1973) index of pathology formulation. All groups were administered a word association test that was scored according to Rapaport, Gill and Schafer's (1968) system. The groups were found to differ at the 0.01 level, which supports the hypothesis. Word associations also were examined for evidence of the paradigmatic/syntagmatic shift first reported by Tendler (1945). The results are interpreted as demonstrating the construct validity of SC scale in that the more pathological the profile, the greater degree of cognitive disturbance exhibi

摘要:
AbstractA group of 104 depressed patients (54 bipolar and 50 unipolar) completed the booklet form of the MMPI. In addition to the usual validity and clinical scales of the MMPI, 55 special scales, selected for relevancy to the affective disorders, also were included in the study. Inspection of the 11 of 68 MMPI scales on which the bipolar group had significantly higher mean scores than the unipolar group disclosed a patterning of scales suggestive of the use of denial and somatization. These results, coupled with those of other recent studies, suggest that socially desirable response sets and the use of denial and somatization on the MMPI are adaptive defenses in bipolar depressed groups.

摘要:
AbstractRaw scores for the clinical scales of the MMPI can be changed to T scores by linear transformation. However, if the underlying distributions of raw scores are not distributed normally, one cannot assume that the traditional point of significance, T score 70, falls at the 97.7 percentile. Our analysis of the improved Minnesota normal sample described by Hathaway and Briggs in 1957 revealed statistically significant degrees of skewness on most of the clinical scales. We suggest that clinicians consider more conservative interpretation for scales 1 (Hs), 2 (D), 7 (PT), 8 (SC), and 9 (MA) for females and for scales 1 (Hs), 2 (D), 4 (PD), 7 (PT), 8 (SC), and 9 (MA) for males.

摘要:
AbstractAssessed students' ability to discriminate between two generalized personality interpretations, which varied in their base rate accuracy within a student sample in two experiments. In Experiment 1, students (N= 40) correctly recognized that the two generalized personality interpretations differed in their base rate accuracy and that neither interpretation described the students as unique individuals. In Experiment 2, (N= 18) these results were replicated for two generalized personality interpretations, which also had been matched for social desirability.

摘要:
AbstractConsidering the view that personal space may serve to protect individuals from unpleasant feelings, preference for personal space was related in this study to psychological maladjustment, aggressiveness, and body experience (N= 100). The results indicated that individuals who tend to be maladjusted and individuals who tend to be aggressive preferred more personal space in face‐to‐face encounters in which theSwas approached by a stranger. With regard to measures of body boundary experience, high Barrier scores were found to be related to preference for more personal space in face‐to‐face encounters in which theSapproached a stranger. With regard to people's perception of the spatial dimensions of their bodies, the more individuals tended to underestimate the size of their bodies, the more personal space they tended to prefer. Results were regarded as generally congruent with the protection theory of the use of persona

摘要:
AbstractDaniels and Hewitt (1978) reported “an extremely strong relationship” between test‐anxiety scores and college course examination scores, whereas earlier investigators found smaller relationships between these variables (and one study reported no significant relationship when intelligence was partialed out). Daniels and Hewitt administed the test‐anxiety measure immediately after a course examination, whereas the other investigators administered the test‐anxiety measures at a different time than the course examinations. In the present study the Sarason Test Anxiety Scale was administered to 40 students immediately after a course examination and to 50 other students after a regular class period. A significant relationship between test‐anxiety and examination scores was obtained only for the former group, and no significant relationship was found for either group when intelligence was partialed out. Thus, the high relationship obtained by Daniels and Hewitt may have resulted at least in part from their students' test‐anxiety levels being altered due to their having just completed a course examination and from their response to demand characteristics inherent in the experimen

摘要:
AbstractA 167‐item short form of the MMPI, the Improved Readability Form (IRF), was shown to contain items that were more readable, more stable, and less ambiguous than excluded items. MMPIs were obtained on 60 medical and psychiatric patients, presumably of normal intelligence, and raw scores for the IRF were calculated and correlated with the scales of the full MMPI. In addition, equations that allowed prediction of full‐scale scores were calculated on the initial sample and applied to a second sample of 60Ss with IQs between 80 and 110. For both samples, average IRF correlations with the full MMPI slightly exceeded corresponding correlations for the MMPI‐168. Also, in cross‐validation the IRF showed a greater correspondence with the MMPI in terms of clinical scale high points than did the MMPI‐168. These results suggest that the IRF may function as well as available short forms with persons of normal and near normal intelligence and that, furthermore, it offers promise for use withSs who are unable to understand the comp
