AbstractAnalyzed therapists' scores on the Community Mental Health Ideology (CMHI) and Democratic Values scales and their sex and professional affiliation to predict the number of psychotherapy visits of 166 outpatients. A step‐wise multiple regression indicated that all variables taken together accounted for 3% of the variance in treatment duration. A four‐way analysis of variance revealed only a significant main effect for the CMHI scale. Thus, low‐scoring CMHI therapists had significantly more therapy sessions with their clients than high‐scoring CMHI therapists. AbstractExamined the relationship of relaxation training to hyperactivity in boys. Ten male Caucasians, who ranged in age from 6–12, were given 10 neutral treatment sessions and 10 relaxation training sessions. Behavioral observation, psychological tests and parental rating were taken before and after both neutral treatment and relaxation training. AbstractReported a self‐report measure of adolescents' assertiveness. Items for this scale were presented to young adolescents (N= 78) and subsequently were subjected to a factor analysis that revealed factors of submissiveness, aggressiveness, and assertiveness. Teacher ratings and behavioral responses during a role‐play test also were obtained and provide additional validational evidence in support of the scale. After the validational study, a small assertiveness training program was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of standard treatment procedures with this population. AbstractPremature termination from psychotherapy has been a persistent problem to therapists. In an effort to identify potential premature terminators, Jochim (1974) examined the items on the Social History Questionnaire and their capacity to differentiate those patients (N= 103) who terminated treatment prematurely from those who remained. The result was a 23‐item instrument that was able to identify accurately 91% of the remainers and 92% of the terminators. AbstractDeveloped, on the basis of responses from 608 undergraduate students to the 33‐item Marlowe‐Crowne Social Desirability Scale, three short forms of 11, 12, and 13 items. The psychometric characteristics of these three forms and three other short forms developed by Strahan and Gerbasi (1972) were investigated and comparisons made. Results, in the form of internal consistency reliability, item factor loadings, short form with Marlowe‐Crowne total scale correlations, and correlations between Marlowe‐Crowne short forms and the Edwards Social Desirability Scale, indicate that psychometrically sound short forms can be constructed. AbstractTested hypotheses derived from Beck's cognitive theory of depression using 60 depressed and nondepressed males and females.Ss rated performance before and after they received feedback on a social interaction task.Ss then attempted to recall feedback and explain their post‐feedback self‐rating. Results showed that depressed males and females had more negative evaluation of present circumstances and poorer memory for feedback. Further, depressed males lowered their self‐evaluation after feedback significantly more than did nondepressed males. Results with regard to differential response to neutral and positive feedback were not found becauseSs apparently perceived all levels of feedback as somewhat negative. AbstractFactor analyzed the Block Child Rearing Practices Report (CRPR), which consists of 91 socialization‐relevant statements. Studies have noted that the CRPR lacks homogeneity from sample to sample because of the large number of determined factors (28–33). The CRPR was administered to 95 parents from an urban and suburban school district and 211 undergraduates majoring in psychology in the form of a questionnaire that utilized a 6‐point Likert type scale. Two factors were determined by analysis of the questionnaire using the Likert type format: Restrictiveness and Nurturance. Forty items of the original 91 loaded on the identified two factors. When the intended Q‐sort format was administered to 150 undergraduate psychology students for cross validation, these two factors were identified further as stable dimensions. The results indicate that the modified 40‐item Likert format of the CRPR facilitates administration and interpretation of the scale, without impeding reliability, and enhances its usefulness as an effective instrument in program e

AbstractRescored 114 MMPIs of back pain patients, using the FAM and MMPI‐168 method to determine whether the Hs‐Hy dyad of individual profiles fell into designated diagnostic brackets consistent with the standard form MMPI. The specified categories were T scores>75, T scores between 65–74, T scores<65. Overall efficiency for both the FAM and the 168 was 66%. For the extreme scores the efficiency of both short forms ranged from 69 to 85%, but in the moderate range (65–74 T) efficiency fell to 21% and 30% for the FAM and 168, respectively.
