AbstractThis paper describes the PTSD Interview (PTSD‐I). It was developed to meet four specifications: (a) close correspondence to DSM‐III standards; (b) binary present/absent and continuous severity/frequency outputs on each symptom and the entire syndrome; (c) administrable by trained subprofessionals; and (d) substantial reliability and validity. It was written to meet the first three criteria. It demonstrated very high internal consistency (alpha = 0.92) and test‐retest reliability (Total scorer= 0.95; diagnostic agreement = 87%). It correlated strongly with parallel DIS criteria (Total score vs. DIS diagnosisrbis= 0.94, sensitivity = 0.89, specificity = 0.94, overall hit rate = 0.92, and kappa = 0.84). AbstractThis study addressed the need for the establishment of clinically viable “easy access” data that could help predict outcome during the earliest stages of hospitalization. The study examined the contributions of an activity‐withdrawal rating, a DSM‐III diagnosis, and demographic variables to the prediction of prognosis. The subject population consisted of 152 patients drawn from the population of three psychiatric units. Prognosis was predicted successfully by activity‐withdrawal, diagnosis, and demographic variables; the best estimate of prognosis resulted from the combination of all the predictor variables. Results are discussed in terms of the individual and joint contributions of the independent variables to prognostic prediction as well as the probable reasons for differential prognosis for each predictor

AbstractTo examine the psychological characteristics of those who terminate treatment for headaches prematurely, this investigation employed 179 post‐tramatic headache patients and 67 nontrauma headache patients who underwent electromyographic (EMG) biofeedback therapy. Dependent variables included the patient's age, socioeconomic status, duration of headache, forehead EMG levels, and MMPI. Multivariate analyses of variance revealed no significant differences between the drop‐outs and non‐drop‐outs among the trauma headache patients, but three MMPI scales (Psychopathic‐Deviate, Paranoia, and Mania) were significantly higher among the nontrauma headache patients who dropped out of treatment. These data imply that different characteristics underlie the drop‐out behavior for different pain conditions and that efforts to uncover a single drop‐out pattern may not

AbstractThe authors factor analyzed DSM‐III‐based post‐traumatic stress disorder symptom ratings made on 131 Vietnam‐veteran PTSD patients. AbstractThe MMPI was administered during the patient‐perceived best time of the menstrual cycle and during the patient‐perceived worst time of the cycle in order to examine the stability of MMPI profile configurations. Subjects were 214 women who were referred to two metropolitan outpatient premenstrual syndrome (PMS) clinics for moderate to severe premenstrual complaints. This sample was selected from 1,849 intake files after screening by strict selection criteria for PMS. AbstractRecently, the alexithymia construct has emerged as a heuristically useful personality construct in the explanation of the pathogenesis of a variety of physical illnesses. Research that has evaluated the alexithymia construct, however, has been conducted with little attention to the psychometric properties of the various scales constructed to measure it. This study investigated the underlying dimensions and factor structure stability of the MMPI Alexithymia scale (MMPI‐A). The MMPI‐A was administered to 552 undergraduates, and the data then were split randomly into two samples. Factor analysis of both samples produced a three‐factor solution with little theoretical relevancy to the alexithymia construct. AbstractThis study evaluated self‐reported symptom improvement on the MCMI‐II Dysthymia (D) scale for 109 depressed psychiatric inpatients. AbstractThe etiology of Tourette Syndrome (TS) according to prevailing views is unknown; there is evidence for both familial and sporadic cases. The author theorizes that abnormal discharges in the frontal lobes comprise the “final common dysfunction” that results in numerous phenomena labelled Tourette syndrome. Facial, vocal, and other motor symptoms of TS are catalogued in parallel with facial, vocal, and body movements that occur during frontal lobe seizures. AbstractThe MMPI is used commonly with neurologic patients despite concerns about its validity with this population. The basis for this concern–possible artifactual effects due to neurologic‐related MMPI items (NRIs)–was assessed in this study of 58 closed head trauma (CHT) patients. The MMPI profiles of these patients were analyzed before and after statistical correction was made for 42 NRIs that were identified by three neurologists. Significant effects occurred on Scales 1 (Hs), 2 (D), 3 (Hy), 7 (Pt), and 8 (Sc) in regard to their T scores, frequency of pathological elevation (T<69), and representation in configured codes. AbstractThe eight Bender‐Gestalt (B‐G) designs scored by the Pascal‐Suttell (P‐S) system proved to be highly intercorrelated, while the ninth component, the Configuration score, was modestly related to only design one. A factor analysis of the eight designs revealed one significant factor, which was interpreted as reflecting general reproductive accuracy rather than special gestalt properties of the drawings. While the P‐S Total score could discriminate between organic (n= 52) and nonorganic (n= 52) clinical outpatient groups with a 74% hit rate, only one design (seven) yielded a 73% discrimination.
