AbstractThis study investigated characteristics and correlates of MMPI change scores among 188 male and female inpatients who were assessed at admission and upon completion of a 9‐week residential program. Predictor variables included admission scores from the standard 13 MMPI scales, the Internal‐ External Locus of Control Scale, the trait component of the State‐Trait Anxiety Inventory, and Shipley‐Hartford Verbal IQ scores, as well as demographic variables including factors that involved psychiatric history. Outcome variables consisted of change scores based on raw score values for each of the 13 MMPI scales. Results of a canonical correlation indicated a significant relationship between predictor and outcome variables, which cumulatively accounted for 27% of the variance of outcome change scores. AbstractThe relationship between color preference and psychiatric disorders was studied in an outpatient psychiatric sample (N= 1,143). The results were studied by gender and by age. The patients' choice of Luscher's eight colors revealed a sex difference, but only minor variations with age. The present data show both consistencies and discrepancies with past data.

AbstractThis study examined the relationship between the Cognitive Deficit scale and psychiatric outcome in a sample of 31 first episode schizophrenics. These patients initially were evaluated during their inpatient hospitalization and thereafter assessed for psychiatric symptomatology at 3‐, 6‐, and 12‐month intervals. At the end of 12 months, 51.6% of the sample were in remission, and 48.4% either remained in their psychotic episode during the follow‐up period or relapsed. However, the two Cognitive Deficit scores obtained at baseline showed no relationship with subsequent outcome of psychiatric illness. AbstractOne hundred and eleven college undergraduates (25% male) participated in one of two cognitive behavioral training programs, which included behavior rehearsal, modelling, coaching, cognitive‐restructuring, and emphasis on the transferability of skills. Neither self‐report nor behavioral outcome differences between the facilitative vs. the didactic approaches were noted. Both programs produced impressive self‐report and behavioral gains in comparison to pretest scores; these gains were maintained 1 to 2 years after the program. There was also evidence of verbal and nonverbal bilateral transfer between request behavior and refusal behavior in the short term. The generalization results were interpreted on the basis that the distinctive components of request behavior (such as enunicating a statement of a problem and a specific request) are more difficult than those of refusal behavior, such than there is transfer of request training to refusal behavior, but not vice versa. AbstractIt was predicted from Freud's seduction theory that women who experienced sexual assault early in life would be identifiable by the MMPI. Twenty‐six of 51 women treated at a psychotherapy clinic during a 2‐year period reported experiencing sexual abuse as a child (RA); 25 made no such claim (NRA). Age, income level, years of formal education, marital status, and k‐corrected scores of the MMPI were submitted to a stepwise multivariate discriminant analysis. It was found that the HY, MF, Hs, and PD scales constituted a linear function that correctly classified 72.55% of the subjects (Wilkes Lambda = .670785,df4, p= .0009). AbstractThe study goal was to identify the main clusters of 16PF score profiles to be found in a mixed sample of students and adults. The 300 subjects represented, half male and half female, were subdivided into three equal subsamples. AbstractThis study tested for five higher‐order dimensions hypothesized to be common to the Interpersonal Style (ISI) and the 16PF questionnaires. A sample of detoxified alcohol dependent inpatients (N= 50) were administered the ISI and the 16PF on two separate occasions. The 31 scale intercorrelations were analyzed by the method of principal axes. An oblique factor structure obtained by use of the Promax procedure confirmed the factors expected. These were interpreted as representing Self Control, Interpersonal Involvement or Exvia, Emotional Stability or reversed 16PF Anxiety, Independence, and Level of Socialization. At least two or three closely similar higher‐order factors have been isolated on each of three other popular inventories (PRF, CPI and GZTS). AbstractThe Brief Symptom Inventory was administered to 204 female and 143 male students at a 4‐year college. Their mean scores on the nine primary symptom dimensions were compared with means of a normative sample of older adults and younger adolescents. The results indicated that college students reported significantly higher levels of distress than did the adult sample and that they showed a different pattern of distress than the younger adolescents. AbstractHarris and Lingoes' (1955) six PD subscales were assessed empirically for their convergent validity and for their utility to discriminate amongst male offenders on the two outcome measures of successful completion of sentences at a correctional halfway house and reincarceration at a 1‐year follow‐up. The results provided varying degrees of convergent validity for the six constructs devised by Harris and Lingoes. In addition, four of the six subscales predicted success in the halfway house program; one of the six subscales predicted reincarceration. AbstractThis study compared overall performance level for both hands combined (OPL) with several lateral deviation measures calculated from scores on a composite finger localization task (FLT) and a speeded pegboard task (SPT) administered to 92 kindergarten entrants. Laterality indices were interrelated moderately or highly on each task, consistently were unrelated to OPL with respect to FLT results, and in some instances were related modestly to OPL for the SPT procedure. Significant relationships, when observed, suggested a limited tendency to diminished motor asymmetry with slowed overall performance. Results, in general, support the view that OPL and lateral deviation as measured in this study are not mutually confounded and, in large degree, comprise relatively independent sources of information to be used in a complementary manner to arrive at accurate neuropsychological inferences.
