摘要:
AbstractThis study was a longitudinal investigation of 95 families who previously had experienced the psychiatric hospitalization of a parent. Promising and/or proven parent, family interaction, and child predictors of 3‐year outcome for the male offspring (beginning ages, 4, 7, and 10) were evaluated comparatively with correlations and multiple regressions. Among parent variables, chronicity of parent disorder and the degree of recovery between acute phases of disorder were broadly predictive of six diverse outcome indices. Variables that reflected diagnostic classifications were notably less successful. Time 1 child IQ was the best preditor of outcome, independent of all others; family interaction quality and degree of recovery were also prominen

摘要:
AbstractThe scores of 40 hospitalized male coronary heart disease (CHD) patients, for seven traditionally employed physical CHD risk factors, were subjected to a confirmatory factor analysis that employed a LISREL program. An attempt was made to confirm a two‐factor solution that involved family history as one factor, and smoking, serum cholesterol level, blood pressure, physical exercise, diet, and weight control as the second. The obtained goodness‐of‐fit index (.84) suggests that the two‐factor solution is a moderately valid one. These findings raise the question whether many of the physical risk factors for CHD simply may be manifestations of a single behavioral characteristic, perhaps best described as “lack of self

摘要:
AbstractSelf‐ratings and judges' ratings of social appropriateness were obtained based upon videotaped role‐enactments of schizophrenics (n= 16), mixed psychiatric controls (n= 16), and normal controls (n= 16) in mock social interactions. Schizophrenics were rated significantly lower on social appropriateness and were judged on semantic differential scales as showing greater deficiencies in social behavior. As predicted, impaired perspective among schizophrenics appeared to be limited to appraisals of self. Schizophrenics, like the comparison groups, were able to discriminate significantly between appropriate and inappropriate behavior of others. But unlike the comparison groups, schizophrenics rated their own behavior significantly higher in social appropriateness than did jud

摘要:
AbstractThis study examined the stress response of 86 civilian subjects at the onset of the Persian Gulf War. The Impact of Events Scale (IES) and the Symptom Checklist‐90‐Revised (SCL‐90‐R) were used to measure participants' subjective stress response and symptoms of psychological distress. Subjects also completed a demographic questionnaire that included questions that ranged from religious affiliation to approval of the war effort. The study describes war‐related stress and the influence of age, religious faith, and attitudes about war on reported levels of stress. Results indicate measurable levels of war‐related stress in this civilian

摘要:
AbstractThe second‐order factor structure of the Devereux Adolescent Behavior Rating Scale was examined in (a) a sample of 254 adolescents who were receiving residential treatment for severe emotional/behavior disorders and (b) an independent sample of 404 adolescents hospitalized for substance abuse. A plausible range of factors was estimated for each group through parallel and average partial analyses and suggested either a two‐ or three‐factor solution. Subsequent congruence analyses provided tentative support for a three‐factor model: (a) undercontrolled/disruptive behaviors; (b) withdrawn/psychotic behaviors; and (c) needs approval/dependent behaviors. The third factor was poorly defined in the residential treatment sample, but extraction of the third factor increased the across‐group replicability of the first tw

摘要:
AbstractRecent formulations of rational‐emotive theory posit a four‐factor stylistic model of irrational thinking. These factors include Demandingness, Awfulizing, I‐Can't‐Stand‐It‐Itis, and Self‐Damnation. This study involved a semantic analysis of 16 linguistic variates hypothesized by Ellis and Dryden (1987) and frequently used in clinical practice to represent the four factors. Four variations of a 6‐point, Likert‐type questionnaire were developed to tap the four factors and the linguistic variates. Subjects were 260 university students and 150 clinical patients, who completed either all four variations (one variation every 2 weeks over a 6‐week period) or a single variation only. Confirmatory factor analyses generally failed to support the four‐factor model. Exploratory factor analyses suggested that a general factor of irrationality may exist in

摘要:
AbstractThe study examined relations between the 15 scale scores of the Interpersonal Style Inventory (Lorr&Youniss, 1985) and the domain measures of the five‐factor model provided by the NEO Personality Inventory (Costa&McCrae, 1985). A sample of 236 college students were administered both inventories. A principal component analysis of the 5 NEO‐PI domain scores and the 15 ISI scale scores followed by a Varimax rotation disclosed the expected five higher‐order factors. Four factors, Neuroticism, Extraversion, Conscientiousness and Ageeableness, were defined by both NEO and ISI scales. Openness to Experience, however, was represented in the ISI by Independence and Directiveness, which define its Autonomy dimension. Thus, the ISI measures four of the five factors assessed by the N

摘要:
AbstractThis study examined the factor structure of the Apperceptive Personality Test (APT), a recently developed picture‐story technique with both projective and objective features. University undergraduates (513 males, 664 females) were administered the APT in individual group sessions. A principal components analysis (Varimax rotation) was performed with 18 of the standard APT variables and resulted in three similar factors for both male and female samples. The first and largest factor was a positive evaluation factor, the second a negative evaluation factor, and the third an “intensity” factor. The usefulness and meaning of the factor analysis are discussed br

摘要:
AbstractThe efficiency of a recently developed MMPI scale (Pan) to identify panic disorder was assessed in samples of both psychiatric and medical patients. Particular attention was paid to base rates and cutting scores. The Pan scale was found to have utility in rule‐out clinical decision making. Suggestions for further validation studies are discusse

摘要:
AbstractThe omission of the Wiggins Content Scales occurred because of the number of items deleted as well as the addition of items to the MMPI‐2. The purpose of this study is to compare scorings of the items on the Wiggins Scales of the MMPI and the items that remain on these scales on the MMPI‐2. The scales of Religious Fundamentalism and Authority Conflict appear to be those most seriously affected by the item change on the MMPI‐2. The scales Depression and Family Conflict maintained all of their items, and the remaining nine were not found to be statistically different when the two scorings were com
