AbstractThis study hypothesized that social competence and clinical factors previously associated with psychiatric outcome among inpatients would be effective predictors of outcome among outpatients (N = 77) as well. Intake and 2‐year outcome status were assessed multidimensionally with absolute‐level and residualized indices of functioning, overall clinical status, and symptomatology. Menninger health‐sickness proved to be the best single predictor, although Phillips premorbid functioning, Strauss‐Carpenter prognosis, social class, and diagnostic severity also predicted well to outcome. Patterns of associated predictor/outcome variable clusters were described. AbstractTwenty‐three (23) females who satisfied the Diagnostic Interview Schedule (DIS) DSM‐III criteria for Major Depression were assessed with the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HRS), the genetically based phenylthiocarbamide (PTC) taste test, and each subject provided a family history of depression. Results show that, compared with PTC nontasters, the tasters suffered deeper depressions, longer periods of sadness, symptoms that resembled “endogenous depression,” and the tasters reported more family members afflicted with depression. AbstractBernstein and Putnam (1986) recently developed the Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES), a reliable and valid measure of dissociative experiences. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of the DES to other measures of psychopathology and cognitive functioning. Seventy‐six female and 43 male university students were administered the DES, the Hopkins Symptom Checklist (HSCL‐90), the Maudsley Obsessional‐Compulsive Inventory (MOCI), the Tellegen Absorption Scale (TAS), and the Barnes‐Vulcano Rationality Test (BVRT). A standard multiple regression was computed that used the DES as the criterion variable and the HSCL‐90, MOCI, TAS, and BVRT as predictor variables. The results showed that 61% of the variance for DES scores could be predicted by three subscales of the HSCL‐90 (Phobic Anxiety, Anger‐Hostility, Somatization) and the TAS and BVRT. AbstractPersonality disorders frequently are seen among depressed psychiatric in‐patients. In a group of 73 depressed psychiatric outpatients, this study identified 85% whose response to the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI) suggested a personality disorder. On retest 12 weeks later, only 64% manifested a response style consistent with the DSM‐III personality disorders. These findings are discussed in relation to methodology, characteristics of the MCMI, and the response style of the depressed patient, which may lead to an overidentification of personality disorders on a self‐report measure. AbstractThis study extended knowledge of the construct validity of Vincent's Diagnostic Inventory of Personality and Symptoms (DIPS) by examining the relationships between the DIPS and the MMPI, the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory, the Profile of Mood States, the Symptom Check List‐90, and the California Psychological Inventory. Subjects were 300 predominantly male psychiatric inpatients. Correlational analyses revealed that the DIPS clinical scales were related most strongly to MMPI and MCMI clinical scales. AbstractFour measures of depression were administered to a normative sample (n = 44) and two psychiatric groups of adolescents (n = 40). Measures included the Adolescent Activity Checklist (AAC), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Automatic Thoughts Questionnaire (ATQ), and Dysfunctional Attitudes Scale (DAS). Only the BDI and ATQ were able to discriminate among the three populations. The DAS and frequency of unpleasant activity (FRUA) subscales of the AAC only differentiated between nondepressed and depressed psychiatric subjects. Adolescent behavioral activity related to depression differed from adults with only mixed support found for cognitive depression among adolescents.

AbstractThe 49‐item MMPI PTSD Subscale, developed and validated with Vietnam combat veterans, was administered to validation and cross‐validation samples of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) patients who had experienced non‐military traumatic events and to psychiatric controls (total N = 69). AbstractThis study used an Aphasia Screening Test (AST) abbreviated to its naming, pronunciation, and sentence interpretation items to compare groups of 60 learning‐disabled (LD), 30 head‐injured (HI), and 30 nondisabled (ND) young adults matched for FISQ and balanced for gender composition. The LD and HI, who did not differ, made significantly more AST errors than the ND. One‐quarter to one‐third of the LD and HI subjects exhibited language deficits.
