AbstractTotal S, extractable SO4, and SO4−retention capacity were determined in a range of soils covering the dominant soil groups in Portugal which are expected to show S deficiency. Total S was relatively low (83–435 mg S kg−1) in all soils and KH2PO4−extractable SO4was, in general, low for plant growth, ranging from 0.9 to 32.2 mg S kg−1. SO4−retention capacity ranged from −33.1 to 64.7 mg S kg−1and was negative in many (14 out of 20) of the soils. Most of the soils are expected to be S deficient and show extensive leaching of SO4. Other selected soil properties that may affect the chemistry of SO4were determined. A highly significant simple correlation was obtained between SO4adsorbed and extractable Al by theMehraandJacksonmethod (CDB‐Al) (r = 0.74; P<0.001). A multiple regression which included silt improved the correlation of SO4adsorbed with CDB‐Al

AbstractRecently S deficiency became one of the most widespread nutrient disorders in North‐European agriculture. Therefore precise and reliable methods for the evaluation of the S nutritional status of agricultural crops are required. For the prognosis of the plant available S soil analysis would be a favourite method, however, no relation between plant S concentrations and mobile (extractable sulphate plus extractable organic S) S contents in soils could be stated. The reasons for the impracticability of traditional soil tests seem to be related to interactions between soil water and mobile S in soils, so that site specific models need to be developed for the prognosis of the S status of agricultural crop

AbstractLeucaena leucocephalais a leguminous, deep rooting tree, increasingly utilized in “Low Input” mixed cultures under arid conditions to reduce mineral N requirements and to improve nutrient cycling. This work was carried out to evaluate the growth and N yield of Leucaena and Maize in sand culture with low (0,6 mM) nitrogen supply under saline conditions (NaCl; NaCl + CaCl2; NaCl + CaSO4).While the low N nutrient solution failed to sustain maize growth in monoculture, both Leucaena and maize grew well in mixed culture with considerable N yields suggesting significant transfer of N from Leucaena to maize.NaCl depressed the uptake of Ca and S and reduced growth and N yields of both crop species. AbstractIndustrial crops provide a possibility for utilization of heavy metal polluted soils. Knowledge of the factors which affect metal uptake by crops is therefore essential in order to develop concepts for the management of such soils.In pot experiments the uptake of Zn by oilseed rape increased considerably with the Zn supply. The increase of Zn uptake was counteracted partly by S. This protective effect of S was, however, not related to Zn retention in the roots.
