AbstractWhen high nitrite concentrations are encountered in soils, the conventional method using sulphanilic acid and N‐(1‐naphthyl)ethylenediamine poses some working problems. In order to increase the working range, pH of the solution of the azo‐dye formed by the reaction of nitrite with sulphanilic acid and N‐(1‐naphthyl)ethylenediamine was raised to 6.0 by adding sodium acetate solution and the absorbance was measured at 480 nm. In combination with the conventional method, the modified method allows analysis of soils containing 1 to 75 ppm nitrite‐N conveniently without the necessity of changing the size of the aliquot. AbstractThe acid‐ and base‐buffering properties of 84 non‐calcareous surface soil samples were studied by batch titration with HCI or KOH at a constant ionic strength of I = 0.1. The soil samples were classified according to their pH of zero point of titration (ZPT). Differential buffer values, dB(H) or dB(OH) (H+or OH−as meq kg−1needed to reduce or increase the soil pH sequentially by 0.5 units, respectively), were introduced to describe the course of titration curve and the intensity of buffer action.In all soils, the first acid‐buffer value, dB(H)0→0.5, varied from 8 to 78 meq kg−1and the second one, dB(H)0.5→1, from 10 to 138 meq kg−1. The corresponding base‐buffer values, dB(OH)0→0.5and dB(OH)0.5→1, ranged from 10 to 48 and from 14 to 44 meq kg−1, respectively. The most acid soils were most strongly buffered against acid, and the soils with the highest initial pH against base. The results reveal the acid‐buffering by exchange reactions to be very important. In the soils with ZPT≦5.4, the first acid‐buffer value was dependent on the content of organic matter and oxalate‐soluble Al, whereas in the more acid soils the role of clay became significant. Thus, it was concluded that at higher pHs the foremost inactivation of H+is attributable to soil components of pH‐dependent charges, and the significance of constituents of permanent charges to increase with proceeding acidification. In strongly acid soils (ZPT≦4.8) the very effective buffering seemed to be primarily due to the dissolution of Al‐hydroxides and, thus, to exert detrimental effects on the edaphic environment. The general rank of soil factors explaining the variation in the base‐buffer values was in accord with the neutralization sequence, i.e. the strongest acid in the soil being neutralized first. AbstractInvestigations on phosphorous uptake, photosynthetic14CO2fixation, assimilate translocation and endogenous cytokinin concentrations were carried out with carrot plants at low and high level phosphorus supply. Source/sink relations were changed in favour of the source (shoot) and at the expence of the sink (root) by GA3sprays. Following GA3treatments the 2‐isopentenyl adenine (2iP) concentration in the tap root was strongly decreased. However, though sink development was drastically reduced due to this treatment, the concentration of translocated labelled assimilates (mainly sucrose) was almost doubled in the tap root as compared to the untreated controls. AbstractIn einer Mischkultur von Mais (Stadium der Rispenblüte) und Lupine (spätes Blühstadium) wurde die räumliche Verteilung der Wurzelsysteme mit der radioautographischen Methode im Hinblick auf die Wurzelkonkurrenz um Makronährstoffe unter Freilandbedingungen in einem sandigen Boden untersucht.Die größten Wurzeldichten wurden für beide Arten in den obersten 40 cm Boden gefunden, und zwar im Umkreis von 10 cm um die jeweilige Sproßachse. Während das Wurzelwachstum von Lupine nahezu auf dieses Bodenvolumen beschränkt blieb, breitete sich das Wurzelsystem von Mais in der Horizontalen aus. Zur Erfassung einer eventuellen interspezifischen Wurzelkonkurrenz um Makronährstoffe wie Phosphat und Kalium, wurde der Durchdringung der Wurzelsysteme beider Pflanzenarten besonderes Augenmerk geschenkt. Die gegenseitige Durchdringung der Wurzelsysteme benachbart wachsender Mais‐ und Lupinenpflanzen (Abstand ca. 50 cm) war aber nur geringfügig. Auf Grund des gefundenen in situ‐Wurzelabstandsmuster der32P markierten Mais‐ und35S markierten Lupinenwurzeln ist keine Wurzelkonkurrenz der beiden Pflanzenarten um die im Boden wenig mobilen Makronährstoffe P und K zu erwarten. AbstractThe effect of previous P additions on commonly used sorption parameters was studied using four alkaline‐calcareous soils of Greece, two Vertisols and two Entisols. Solution concentration and buffering capacity indices were significantly affected while sorption curves of the quantity of P removed from the solution (x/m) against final P solution concentration (c) were shifted to the right, towards the highercconcentration values. Different buffering indices (e.g. the slope of the Freundlich equation, the slope of the semi‐logarithmic sorption curve ofx/magainst logc, the slope of the linear portion of the highcconcentration range) showed an increasing trend with increasing previous P additions to the soils, with the exception of the slope of the tangent of the Freundlich equation atc= 1 μg P/ml. However, correction for the quantity of exchangeable P already present in the soil (q), resulted in an increasing trend for this parameter as well, while obviously it did not have any effect on the slopes of the linear portions of the sorption curves. Chemical changes, as for example the slow formation of insoluble Ca–P salts, could possibly explain the increased capacity of previously fertilized alkaline‐calcareous soils to remove P from the experimental equilibration solution suggested by the increasing trend in the buffering indices of the present work. AbstractSix cultivars of sugar beet characterized by different sugar contents were grown in water culture on Reid‐York nutrient solution for 30 days. Nitrogen was included in the medium in the form of either NH4NO3, NH4Cl or Ca(NO3)2at the concentrations 105, 210 and 420 mg N/l.The results obtained reveal that both shoot dry weight and leaf area were dependent upon the type of cultivar and the form and concentration of nitrogen present in the nutrient solution. The least amount of shoot matter and the smallest leaf area were obtained in the presence of ammonium as the sole nitrogen source.The concentration of total nitrate and ammonium nitrogen measured in the shoot was found to be dependent on the cultivar type and on the concentration of nitrogen present in the nutrient solution.The highest oxalic acid concentrations were detected in plants grown on nitrate. AbstractIn einem Gefäßversuch wird die Wasseraufnahme einer Testpflanze (Festuca rubra) aus unterschiedlich versalzten Bodenlösungen untersucht. Mittels fest im Boden installierten Taupunkthygrometern wird das Bodenwasserpotential während der Versuchsphase verfolgt. Anhand der täglichen Wägungen erfolgt die Berechnung des jeweiligen Bodenwassergehaltes und des Wasserverbrauchs durch die Pflanzen.Zu Beginn, in der Mitte und am Ende der Versuchsperiode wurden Parallelgefäße abgeerntet, um Sproßgewichte und ‐wassergehalte zu bestimmen und das Sproßwasserpotential in zerstörten Pflanzenproben mit der Taupunktmethode zu messen.Am Ende der Versuchsphase hatten die mit dest. H2O und 0,1‐molaler NaCl‐Lösung behandelten Varianten mit hoher Transpirationsrate fast alles zur Verfügung stehende Wasser verbraucht und waren nahezu vertrocknet. Die mit stärker versalzten Lösungen gegossenen Pflanzen hatten ihre Transpiration vorzeitig reduziert. Die mit mittlerer Salzkonzentration (0,2‐molale NaCl) gegossenen Pflanzen zeigten zum Schluß den höchsten Pflanzenwassergehalt und das höchste Wasserpotential, während bei den höher versalzten Varianten das Wasserpotential durch den größeren osmotischen Anteil stärker erniedrigt wurde. Im Vordergrund des Versuches stand der Vergleich des mit der Taupunktmethode gemessenen Bodenwasserpotentials mit errechneten Werten. Hierzu wurden die pF‐Kurve des Bodens und der jeweilige Bodenwasserge‐halt zur Bestimmung des Matrixpotentials verwandt, während die osmotische Teilkomponente des Wasserpotentials einmal aus der Chloridkonzentration der Bodenlösung, zum anderen aus der elektrischen Leitfähigkeit des Bodensättigungsextraktes berechnet wurde.In beiden Fällen ergeben sich enge Korrelationen zwischen den gemessenen und errechneten Werten, womit die Eignung der Taupunktmethode für ent

AbstractAlterskurven gegen Bodentiefe zeigen je nach langsamer Entstehung über Pararendzinastadium oder schnellerem Tiefenwachstum des Epipedons unter eher anmoorigen Bedingungen flacher gestreckte oder steilere Gestalt mit eindeutiger Alterszunahme in die Tiefe. Dies und 29114C‐Daten mit Regressionen unterschiedlicher Steigungskoeffizienten X von Mollisolen zeigen, daß Bioturbation nicht einer gleichmäßigen Durchmischung der C‐Atome unterschiedlichen Alters entspricht. Höchste X‐Werte kennzeichnen steilste Alterszunahme in die Tiefe und schwächste Bioturbation. Alter/Profilmaximalalter gegen Tiefe aufgetragen ergibt eine Abbaubeziehung. Die steilen Regressionsgeraden stehen für älteste C‐Spezies und stärksten Abbau des jungen Materials, die flachen für langsamen Abbau. Vergleichende14C‐Alter von Kornfraktionen der Feuchttschernoseme „Asel”︁ und „Söllingen”︁ ergeben Altersmaxima im Mittel‐ und Feintonbereich. Körper‐C schichtweise gesammelter Regenwürmer ist aus allen Tiefen rezent (>100% NBS). AbstractThe lime potentials of several electrodialysed variable charge soils of Australia and China were directly measured with two ion‐selective electrodes when titrated with Ca(OH)2. The lime potential (pH – 0.5 pCa) was higher for the Ferralsol than that for the Acrisol or the Luvisol. The presence of organic matter led to a lower pH – 0.5 pCa value. The pH – 0.5 pCa curve was closely related to the pH curve for a given soil, but was more distinct than the latter. Lime potential ranges of 1.5–3.0, 3.0–5.0 and 5.0–7.0 corresponded to pH ranges of about 4.0–5.2, 5.2–7.0 and 7.0
