AbstractWe estimated the contribution of dissolved organic matter (DOM) to cation leaching and the translocation of acidity in three acid forest soils. The analysis was based on monitored (2 years) concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the field, measured total acidities of DOM, and measured as well as predicted weighted mean dissociation constants of the organic acids. Although the forest floor solutions were strongly acidic (pH 3.47–4.10), a considerable proportion of the organic acids was dissociated and organic anions represented 22–40% of the total anions in the mineral soil input. The flux of DOM‐associated exchangeable protons from the forest floor to the mineral soil ranged from 0.35 (Wülfersreuth) to 3.72 (Hohe Matzen) kmol ha−1yr−1. In the subsoil, this organic acidity may be neutralized by microbial decomposition of the organic acids, but a part of the hydrogen ions may dissociate and contribute to acidification of the soil solution and to weathering processes. AbstractThe widely‐used Silva‐Bremner method for determining non‐ exchangeable NH4−N in the soil was modified so as to reduce reagent requirement and the time taken to carry out the analyses. In the modification, boiling the mixture of soil and KOBr on a hot plate was replaced with heating the soil/KOBr mixture, directly placed in centrifuge tubes, in a boiling water bath or a microwave oven. The best procedure is to keep the soil/KOBr mixture for 10 minutes in the water bath or for 10 minutes at 50% of full power in a microwave oven. AbstractThe release of hydroxyl ions during specific adsorption of chloride by variable‐charge soils of China was studied by comparing the difference in pH of the suspension between a HCl‐treated system and a HNO3−treated system. AbstractThe study aimed at evaluating whether salt‐induced mobilization of acidity may be modified by the type of anion. For this purpose, the effects of different neutral salts on the solution composition of acid soils were investigated. The results were compared with those of the addition of acids. Two topsoil (E and A) and two subsoil horizons (Bs and Bw) were treated with NaCl, Na2SO4, MgCl2, MgSO4, HCl, and H2SO4at concentrations ranging from 0 to 10 mmol dm−3.With increasing inputs of Cl−the pH of the equilibrium soil solution dropped, the concentrations of Al and Ca increased, and the molar Ca/(Al3++ AlOH2++ Al(OH)2+) ratios decreased. These effects were the least pronounced when NaCl was added and the most at the HCl treatments. According to the release of acidity, the topsoils were more sensitive for salt‐induced soil solution acidification whereas on base of the molar Ca/(Al3++ AlOH2++ Al(OH)2+) ratios, the salt effect seems to be more important for the subsoils.Addition of S042−salts and H2SO4induced higher pH and lower Al concentrations than the corresponding Cl−treatments due to the SO42−sorption, especially in the subsoils. The Ca/(Al3++ AlOH2++ Al(OH)2+) ratios were higher than those of the corresponding Cl−treatments. In subsoils even after H2SO4additions these ratios were not higher than those of the NaCl treatments.The results indicate (I) that speculation about the effects of episodic salt concentrations enhancement on soil solution acidification not only need to consider the ionic strength and the cation type but also the anion type, (II) that salt‐induced soil solution composition may be more crucial in subsoils than in topsoils, and (III) that in acid soils ongoing input of HNO3due to the precipitation load may induce an even more acidic soil solution than the inputs of H2SO4o

AbstractIm Rahmen von Vergleichsuntersuchungen zum Stoffaustragsver‐halten verschiedener gedränter Standorte in Schleswig‐Holstein wurde an zwei Experimentalflächen unterschiedlicher Bodeneigenschaften im Spätherbst 1991 Kaliumbromid auf einer Teilfläche der untersuchten Dräneinzugsgebiete appliziert. Niederschläge, Dränabfluß und Bromidkonzentrationen wurden über einen Zeitraum von 6 Monaten beobachtet. Die Analyse der hydrologischen Daten zeigte, daß der Abfluß am ton‐ und schluffhaltigeren Standort Bokhorst (L) deutlich spontaner auf Niederschläge reagierte als am sandreichen Standort Hohn (S). Während für den Lehmstandort ein leichter Abflußüberschuß bei der einfachen Wasserbilanz berechnet wurde, lag für den Sandstandort ein Defizit von 43 mm vor.Am Standort Bokhorst (Lehm, Pararendzina‐Pseudogley) wurden die höchsten Bromidkonzentrationen im Dränabfluß unmittelbar nach Applikation ermittelt. Ein ereignisabhängiger Bromidaustrag war zu beobachten, der durch einen zeitgleichen Anstieg von Bromidkonzentration und Abflußrate gekennzeichnet ist. Am Vergleichsstandort Hohn (Sand, Gley‐Humuspodsol) war das erste Auftreten des Bromids erst nach über 30 mm Abfluß zu messen. Maximalkonzentrationen, die insgesamt deutlich niedriger als in Bokhorst lagen, stellten sich erst zum Ende der Abflußperiode ein. Insgesamt wurden in Bokhorst 70.5% und in Hohn 33% des applizierten Bromids innerhalb einer Abflußperiode über die Dräne ausgetragen. Die bevorzugte Stoffverlagerung am Standort Bokhorst konnte mit einem zweidimensionalen, auf Richards‐ und klassischer Stofftransportgleichung basierenden Dränmodell nicht nachvollzogen werden. AbstractA procedure for quantifying minerals in particle size fractions of fine earth (<2 mm) is presented. Mineral fractions of the acid forest soils are characterised by various transition products. Transitional minerals between illite and vermiculite or smectite, polyhydroxy‐Al polymers interlayered in smectite and vermiculite, as well as poorly crystalline compounds are present. Normative calculations with standard minerals, generally applied to rocks, cannot be used to quantify precisely minerals of these soil samples. Conventional qualitative and quantitative chemical analyses are therefore completed by microanalyses of well‐identifiable minerals. The calculation procedure is based mainly on a system of simultaneous linear equations. These are set up from the chemical contents of a particle size fraction on the one hand and from the corresponding element contents of single minerals on the other hand. AbstractThe status and the distribution of iron and manganese oxides were studied in six soil profiles from Thrace region (Greece), classified as Rhodoxeralfs and Haploxeralfs. The acid ammonium oxalate and the dithionite‐citrate‐bicarbonate methods were used to extract the free iron and manganese oxides from the soils. In both great groups the Fed and Mnd values are higher than Feo and Mno values, respectively, indicating that a considerable fraction is present in crystalline form. Both Feo/Fed and Fed‐Feo values suggest that, in the study area, Haploxeralfs are less developed soils than Rhodoxeralfs. The manganese oxides present in crystalline forms (Mnd‐Mno) were more in Rhodoxeralfs than in Haploxeralfs, suggesting that the crystallinity of manganese oxides increases, with the degree of soil development. AbstractBenetzungshemmungen treten meist in humosen Oberböden auf, wo auch die Temperaturgradienten am größten sind. Über den Einfluß von Temperaturen und Temperaturgradienten auf die Wasserbewegung benetzungsgehemmter Böden ist bislang wenig bekannt. Mit der vorliegenden Studie ist daher beabsichtigt, den simultanen Einfluß von Temperatur‐ und Wasserspannungsgradienten auf den Wassertransport zu erfassen. Dazu wurde ein Laborversuch mit vier Sandböden durchgeführt. Die Böden hatten annähernd gleiche Körnung und Humusgehalte zwischen 1.0 und 2.4 Prozent. Die Kontaktwinkel wurden mit einem Kontaktwinkelmeßverfahren gemessen und weisen Werte zwischen 25 und 111 Grad auf. Die Laborversuche wurden mit Säulensystemen durchgeführt, wobei am oberen Rand ein konstantes Matrixpotential von −175 hPa und zusätzlich ein konstanter Temperaturgradient um l.1°C/cm eingestellt wurde. Über eine keramische Platte im Kontakt mit einem Vorratsgefäß konnte die Säule Wasser aufnehmen oder abgeben, das untere Säulenende war geschlossen. Mit zunehmender Benetzungshemmung weichen die Tiefenprofile der Matrixpotentiale und Wassergehalte voneinander ab. Ergebnisse von Simulationsrechnungen mit einem Modell nachPhilipundDe Vries(1957) zur Beschreibung des gekoppelten Wärme‐ und Feuchtetransports wurden mit den zeitabhängigen Meßwerten verglichen. Es deutet sich an, daß für die Böden mit Kontaktwinkeln im Bereich 25–35, 93–108 und 109–111 Grad die zeitabhängigen Feuchteänderungen in der Säule dann gut mit dem Modell beschrieben werden können, wenn der anisotherme Dampfdiffusionskoeffizient, DTV, mit einem Verstärkungsfaktor zwischen zwei und drei multipliziert wird. Für den Boden mit Kontaktwinkeln zwischen 45 und 83 Grad und Gehalten an organischer Substanz von 2.4 Prozent liegt der Verstärkungsfaktor im Bereich um sieben bis acht. AbstractThe methane dynamics of soils covering a landfill in Oldenburg, Lower Saxony, was investigated in 1996. The methane concentration was often<20 nmol (dry g)−1within the cover layer and up to 9950 nmol (dry g)−1within the refuse body. The methane production rates correlated positively with the methane concentrations and were mostly<10 nmol (dry g)−1d−1within the cover layer and up to 1090 nmol (dry g)_1d_1within the refuse body. The methane oxidation rates varied between 38.0–2310 nmol (dry g)−1d−1. The methane emission rates showed values of up to 574 mol m−2h−1, but in two cases no emission of methane was found. The data indicate that the methano‐genesis of the deep refuse layers did not substantially affect the methane behaviour of the upper soil sections. It is likely that the emission of methane from landfills can be reduced by thick well aerated cover layers.The term “Reduktosol” for landfill soils
