Some aspects of bacteria‐plant interactions affecting yield response are discussed. These include provision of fixed nitrogen, specificity and adaptation to root habitat, influence of microbial metabolites, enhancement of VA‐mycorrhiza, displacement of deleterious rhizosphere microorganisms, differences between host plant genotypes, competitive ability and longevity of inoculants. AbstractDie Untersuchungen waren auf die Frage ausgerichtet, inwieweit die mittels Elektroultrafiltration (EUF)) gewonnenen N‐Fraktionen des Bodens die N‐Verfügbarkeit für Getreide widerspiegeln. Alle Bodenproben wurden aus dem Oberboden von Ackerschlägen praktischer Landwirte gezogen, wobei unterschiedliche Bodentypen und Bodenarten einbegriffen waren. Die noch im Herbst nach der Zuckerrübenernte gezogenen Bodenproben sowie die Proben, die im Januar unter Getreide gezogen wurden, wiesen in ihren EUF‐Extrakten hauptsächlich organischen N und nur zu einem geringeren Anteil NO3‐N auf. Die Abnahme im Gehalt an EUF‐extrahierbarem N im Verlauf des Frühjahres (März bis Ende Mai) korrelierte hochsignifikant mit der Stickstoffaufnahme von Weizen und mit dessen Kornertrag. Hierbei zeigte sich in den nicht mit N gedüngten Parzellen, daß dem organischen N des EUF‐Extraktes als mineralisierbare N‐Quelle eine größere Bedeutung zukommt als dem extrahierten NO3. Die an 20 verschiedenen Schlägen ermittelte Beziehung zwischen den EUF‐N‐Gehalten von im Frühjahr gezogenen Bodenproben und dem Kornertrag von Weizen war hochsignifikant (r = 0,79***). AbstractAn impermeable fine clayey montmorillonitic soil (Aquic Xerofluvent) was reclaimed using high‐salt water and the addition of a constant quantity of Ca at each step in successive dilutions. The soil attained the theoretically expected values of ESP and the depth of water which passed through the soil was close to the theoretical level. The leachate was studied throughout the process of reclamation and the following results obtained: At the end of the reclamation all ions were seen to be decreasing. The percolation rate of the soil and the „valence‐dilution”︁ effect of the reclaiming water permitted a satisfactory exchange of Na by Ca and Mg keeping the quantity of water close to the theoretically expected levels. The mean hydraulic conductivity (MHC) is strongly depended on the electrolyte concentration and the sodium/total concentration (Na/C) or Ca+Mg/total concentration (R) values of the

AbstractZur Bestimmung der ungesättigten Wasserleitfähigkeit von Einzelaggregaten wurde eine Methode entwickelt, die es ermöglicht, entsprechend dem vonBecher(1970) beschriebenen Berechnungs‐verfahren mittels Mikrotensiometern (Material P80, KPM Berlin, Ø Spitze ca. 1 mm, Länge der keramischen Zelle 1–2 mm) die Wasserspannungsänderung über sehr kurze Fließstrecken (1–3 mm) zu erfassen. Ergebnisse von jeweils 3 Einzelaggregaten mit unterschiedlichem Entwicklungsgrad (Prismen, Polyeder) zeigen, daß je nach Art und Intensität der Aggregierung die Werte für die ungesättigte Wasserleitfähigkeit um bis zu 2 Zehnerpotenzen unter denen der entsprechenden Gesamtbodenproben liegen. AbstractDuring periods of water depletion the water supply of plants from saline soils is reduced due to the simultaneous decrease of the soil osmotic and the soil matric water potential. Common models on the water uptake from saline soils assume a similar depressing effect of osmotic and matric water potentials on the water uptake by plants. As plants differ in their ability to overcome salt stress and soils differ in their water retention curves there is some doubt for the general validity of this assumption. The paper presents results of an experiment with rape grown in a sandy and a silty soil at three salinity levels. The transpiration rate of the plants was determined during a period of 34 hours and related to the total water potential of the two soils. In case of the silty soil, the transpiration was related to the total soil water potential at all salinity levels. In the sandy soil, however, the transpiration was much more affected by decreasing soil matric potential than by equivalent decreases of the soil osmotic potential. The results show that the effect of both potentials on the water supply of plants is not the same and has to be treated separately.

AbstractVon 6 Feldern auf podsolierten Braunerden aus Geschiebesand wurden in Abständen von 5–12 Tagen 7 mal Bodenproben genommen und hieraus Bodenlösung zur Messung der Kationen‐ (Ca, Mg, K, Na) und Anionen‐ (NO3, Cl) Konzentration abzentrifugiert (Abb. 1). Eine Regenperiode mit 90 mm in 10 Tagen erniedrigte die Konzentration in der Bodenlösung von 0–30 cm drastisch (Abb. 3) und ließ sie in 30–60 cm entsprechend ansteigen (Abb. 5). Die Abnahme der K‐Konzentration war aber viel geringer als die von Ca und Mg, wie es bei Bestehen eines Austauschgleichgewichts auch zu erwarten ist. Die AR0‐Werte nach Beckett änderten sich durch die K‐Verlagerung nur wenig, durch den Pflanzenentzug von K aber erheblich (Tab. 2).Es werden die theoretischen Möglichkeiten diskutiert, die unvermeidbare Auswaschung von K auf Kosten von Ca und

AbstractChemical and spectroscopic characteristics were determined on the organic matter in two Luvisolic soils from northwestern Alberta, Canada. One of these (the Debolt soil) is known to crust only slightly while the other (the Demmitt soil) exhibits severe crusting after heavy rainfalls. The Debolt top soil is richer in total C, total N, carbohydrates and proteinaceous materials than the Demmitt top soil. Humic acid extracted from the Debolt soil is more aliphatic, and contains fewer CO2H groups than does humic acid extracted from the Demmitt soil. The quality of the organic matter appears to play a role in soil crusting.
