Time series of levels of Lake Victoria as measured at four points are analysed for trends, periodicities and autoregressive components. Comparisons are made with results of time series analysis of Lake Superior which is a similarly sized lake. Checks are made for evidence of differential crustal movement using differences between time series on opposite sides of the lake.

摘要:
The paper deals with the estimation of the probability distribution of the yearly maximum of the peak discharge Q by means of the distribution of the maximum of the daily discharge q and the distribution of the ratio R = Q/q. The study was carried out for some catchments in Tuscany, analysing the dependence of the parameters of R on the geomorphic catchment parameters. The values of the discharge Q, relevant to an assigned return period, obtained by the methods given herein agree rather well (the error is about 20%) with those directly obtained from the observed values of Q.

摘要:
A measure of the kinetic energy per unit mass of effective rainfall is developed as a function of the storm characteristics and the instantaneous unit hydrograph of a basin. The lower the kinetic energy at the outlet for a given potential energy, the larger is the energy expenditure inside the basin and the larger one may expect to find the drainage density. This analysis shows that the drainage density cannot be analysed on the basis of climate alone and that it is necessary to take into account the response characteristics of the basin in any spatial or climatic study of drainage densities.

The snowmelt runoff process from small basins is discussed. A differentiation is made between overland flow in the snowpack and groundwater flow induced by infiltrating meltwater. The effect of variations of the snowmelt intensity on streamflow is studied. It is shown that the runoff is high from the first day of snowmelt runoff if the streamflow is caused by overland flow, and that there are pronounced peaks every day, which almost correspond with the snowmelt intensity during daytime. Streamflow originating from groundwater, on the other hand, increases continuously during the snowmelt and shows only small daily peaks in the flow. Simultaneous overland and groundwater flow are also discussed. Observed runoff hydrographs from small basins are analysed in some detail. For the open fields studied the runoff shows the typical character of overland flow. For a rather large forested area the surface runoff also constitutes an important part of the runoff, but the groundwater baseflow is considerable.

The error of the estimate of the yield of a direct supply reservoir due to limited data was investigated for conditions prevailing in the northwest of Europe using the error of the 2% design drought for durations up to 36 months as a measure of this error. Two methods of estimating the 2% drought were considered: the monthly design drought and an empirical procedure which requires only rainfall data. The errors for the design drought were found by splitting a 500-year monthly flow record into shorter records; the 500-year record was obtained by extending an historic record of 111 years using the Thomas-Fiering model. To estimate the errors of the empirical procedure, a widely used method of Law (1953), which uses rainfall data and the mean annual losses to estimate the design drought, was applied to 13 catchments with historic records greater than 30 years. The error of the empirical procedure was found from the differences between the empirical procedure and the estimate from the historic data. When the results from the two analyses were compared, the accuracy of the empirical procedure was for all durations equal to the accuracy obtained from a record of between 10 and 20 years.
