摘要:
Performance of nine species ofProsopiswas evaluated in species site interaction trials in order to identify promising species for afforestation of alkaline soil site (pH > 9). Eight of these species(P affinis, P. chilensis, P. flexuosus, P. glandulosa, P. lampa, P. pallida, P. siliquastrumandP. tamarugo)were exotic while one(P. juliflora)was a local species. Differences in leaf trait and thorn characters among species were well marked. Out of the nine species, only five had thorn-less plants. Their frequency varied from 5 to 51% with maximum inP. siliquastrum. P. tamarugocould not survive in the field and most of its plants died during the first year itself.P. affinisandP. pallida, both from Peru, showed outstanding performance and tolerance to soil sod-icity.P. affiniswas found to be significantly superior (P < 0.05, 0.01) among all the species investigated whileP. pallidaranked next to it.P. juliflorawas moderate in its performance while rest of the species performed relatively poor in terms of growth. Mineral composition of foliage, both macro-nutrient (N > K > Ca > Na > P) and micro-nutrient (Fe > Cu > Mn and Zn), showed a specific pattern. The outstanding species had an economy uptake of nitrogen while the species with poor performance in terms of stem volume showed luxury uptake. Soil properties underProsopisplantation resulted in marked decrease in soil pH and sodium content, and improved organic carbon, N, K and P concentration of the soil.P. affinisandP. pallidaare recommended for sodic soil afforestation for their tolerance and adaptability.

摘要:
A five year field experiment was conducted to get information which will facilitate the scientific development of tree mixtures in an agroforestry system with two fruit trees viz., mango(Mangifera indicaL.) and cashew(Anacardium occidentaleL.) and four tropical nitrogen fixers viz.,Acacia auriculiformis, Acacia holosericea, Casua-rina equisetifoliaandLeucaena leucocephala.Observations on biometrics and edaphic parameters were recorded. Enhanced growth of cashew and mango was observed when coplanted with casuarina and leucaena, respectively. The enhanced height growth of cashew by 25% is recorded when interplanted with casuarina and plant girth (10.8 cm) was maximum when interplanted with leucaena. About 11% increase in height growth of mango was registered when interplanted with leucaena. The investigation identified two nitrogen fixers namely casuarina and leucaena for coplanting in cashew and mango orchards, respectively in the initial establishment Stage.

摘要:
Experiments were carried out to induce rooting on coppice shoot cuttings ofEnterolobium cyclocarpumwith the aid of auxins. Auxin treatments stimulated sprouting of cuttings in almost all seasons, but only cuttings prepared in January-March responded for rooting. Highest percentage (60) of rooting was obtained with IBA 100 ppm followed by 200 ppm (30%). IAA treated cuttings showed rooting only in 20 percent. No rooting was recorded either in control or in NAA treated cuttings. Cuttings having diameter of 1.5 cm and above responded well. The results demonstrated that season of preparation of cuttings, auxin concentration and thickness of the cuttings play significant role in successful production of propagules.

摘要:
In the southern part of the Alps the intensive use of forests for domestic animals has declined this century and particularly during the last few decades. After the Second World War wild ungulates, rare or absent at the beginning of this century, increased in number and expanded their range. Mountain forests are very vulnerable to ungulate damage owing to the long periods needed for regeneration processes. In this study, the impact of ungulate browsing on forest regeneration was investigated in 10 areas of the Italian Alps. The incidence of browsing damage on forest regeneration (10-150 cm height) was found to vary between 52.8% in the most severely damaged area and 6.9% in the least affected area. The lethality of browsing damage (used as index of browsing intensity) was found to be nil in 4 areas out of ten and up to 17.2% in the areas with the highest ungulate density. Ungulate density is not the only factor influencing degree of browsing damage; winter tourism and land and road settlements in potential ungulate winter ranges also play an important role. Naturalistic silviculture is the most profitable system for the conservation and the sustain-ability of the whole forest ecosystem but high ungulate densities prevent its application.

摘要:
The study reveals that a greater potential lies in generating income and employment through development of NTFPs for the underprivileged tribal population in Gujarat. It is estimated that NTFPs generate, on an average, employment equal to some 3.7 million man-days and an income of Rs 62.7 million (approximately $1.8 m) per annum. In addition, many NTFPs, are collected for household consumption and thus provide food security to several needy people. Most NTFPs have potential for value addition at local level so that more employment and income can be generated in the village economy. The multiplier impacts of this is expected to be substantial in the local economy. The scope for value addition is high and is possible by 200% or more of the value of the raw or unprocessed NTFPs. Enforcement of grades and standardization is another way of adding value to raw produce of NTFPs. The concerns about the diminishing stocks of NTFPs are raised and the need for a national economic policy for the NTFPs is established.
