摘要:
The objective of this study is to project the sustainability of Siberia and Far East Russia's forest resource. This projection involves using empirical data to evaluate the impact of increased ecological protection and increased management activities, such as fire prevention, pest management, and regeneration efforts. As a result of these projections, we quantify a biologically sustainable harvesting level. In 1988, there were an estimated 551.6 million hectares of forested area in Siberia and Far East Russia in the major forest types. Of this total, about 55 percent are nonexploitable forests which are protected from harvesting due to ecological limitations. Exploitable forests contained an estimated total growing-stock volume of 29.8 billion cubic meters and nonexploitable forests contained 30.7 billion cubic meters. Projections based on implementation of selected management actions on exploitable forests show a potential to maintain a sustainable harvest level of almost 260 million cubic meters by 2028, and more than 275 million cubic meters by 2068.

摘要:
Recent advances in remote sensing technologies and image analysis provide a realistic opportunity to develop a reliable, robust indicator of forest health for Australian eucalypt forests. Using these technologies we present the development of a conceptual framework for a new indicator based on eucalypt canopy condition. The indicator, termed the Eucalypt Canopy Condition Index (ECCI), is derived from an assumed hierarchy of canopy decline symptoms, both physiological and structural. Our objective is to identify and discuss possible combinations of spectral, radiometric and spatial (scale) features from remotely sensed data that theoretically and practically correlate with each hierarchical phase of severity in canopy decline. Some of the issues associated with the development and application of the ECCI are discussed, and finally, how the ECCI could be integrated into existing or future operational systems is illustrated.

摘要:
This study makes the case for proper valuation of NTFPs and reviews various types of models that can be used for this purpose. Two types of values-income/flow and wealth/stock-are suggested; these can be estimated with six types of conceptual models. The data requirements of models along with their merits and de-merits are explained. Finally, the study explains the variation in the NTFP values across studies/countries in terms of various factors with the help of a value equation. Some guidelines for computing economic values of NTFPs are also suggested.

摘要:
On the Laurel Hill, anecdotal accounts reported coppice regeneration of oaks to be limited. Possible causes of poor sprouting success were large stump size, deer browsing, season of cutting and poor tree vigor. Our study site had been partially cut three years before this study to salvage some northern red oak(Quercus rubraL.) which had died. We attempted to increaseQ. rubravigor, as measured by increasing basal area growth, with soil amendments of 6,600 kg/h dolo-mitic lime, 110 kg/h K2O equivalents and 220 kg/h P2O5 equivalents while accounting for other growth variables. The objective was to improve overallQ. rubrasprouting success by increasing vigor prior to harvest. The soil amendments increased soil available calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), potassium (K) and phosphorus (P) and reduced available aluminum (Al). Foliar concentrations of Ca, Mg and K were increased. Basal area increment of treatedQ. rubratrees increased by 10 percent and terminal elongation increased by nearly 100 percent. Two years after treatment, the trees were cut during the dormant season and all stumps were protected from deer browsing. After two years, 80 percent of the stumps had sprouted. No effect of lime and fertilizer on the sprouts was found.

摘要:
A micropropagation process was developed forAnogeissus latifolia-atree of fragile ecosystems. Multiple shoots were regenerated from cotyledonary node and epicotyl explants on Murashige and Skoog's (MS) medium containing 0.1 mgl-1indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) + 1.5 mgl-l6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) + additives (25 mgl-leach of adenine sulphate, L-arginine, ascorbic-, citric acids and 1.0 mM L-asparagine) + 200 μM Fe-EDTA (ferric-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) salt. The shoots differentiatedin vitrowere subcultured and repeatedly transferred onto fresh medium but with 1.0 mgl-1of BAP to achieve 4-5 fold rate of shoot multiplication. After every 4th week of culture, from each culture bottle 8-10 shoots could be harvested for rooting. The shoots produced in culture were rootedin vitroon half strength MS medium with 1.0 mgl-leither ofIBA(indolebutyric acid) or NAA (naphthaleneacetic acid). The shoots were pulse treated with combination (100 mgl-leach) ofIBAand NOA (2-naphthoxy acetic acid) rootedex vitro.Theex vitroroot induction method is highly efficient and plantlets so generated could be acclimatized and pot transferred. The process developed can be used for large scale production of plants of A.

摘要:
Chlorophyll fluorescence characteristics, proline, amino acids, total soluble carbohydrates and pigment contents were examined during the summer period in seedlings of seven multipurpose tree species, specificallyAlnus nepalensis, Boehmeria rugulosa, Celtis austra-lis, Dalbergia sissoo, Ficus glomerata, Grewia optivaandSapium se-biferum, grown in abandoned agricultural and degraded lands. All species invariably showed lower photochemical efficiency of photosys-tem II measured as Fv/Fm ratio in degraded land as compared to abandoned agricultural land exceptS. sebiferum, which exhibited identical efficiency at both sites. However, differences in percent reduction were observed among the species, withB. rugulosaexhibiting maximum reduction in Fv/Fm ratio in degraded land, whereas minimum reduction was observed inG. optivaandD. sissoo.Plants grown in degraded land also showed significant reduction in leaf area and total leaf number per
