摘要:
The subcellular features of the tergal glands of the third gastral segment are described in maleParischnogaster mellyi.Secretory cells were found to be engaged in exocytosis which leads to the release of a thin product with intracytoplasmic accumulation of residual secretory components in the form of fingerprint-like bodies. The most remarkable ultrastructural specialization in these cells is the secretory outflow pathway, which includes a deep reservoir, an evoluted end apparatus, a peculiar tracheiform duct, and a subtegumental utricular cistern, the “cuticular vessel”. Large amounts of secretory product may be discharged on the tergal surface from the utricles, following the abdominal movements characteristic of male patrolling.

摘要:
The cuticular hydrocarbon components of foundresses ofPolistes biglumis bimaculatusand of eggs, larvae, pupae and nest paper of the same species were examined by gas-chromatography/mass spectrometry. All the profiles obtained contained a mixture ofn—and branched alkanes of various chain lengths;n-pentacosane,n-heptacosane andn-nonacosane have been identified. Profiles of different individuals showed quantitative differences. Hexane extracts obtained from eggs, larvae, pupae and nest paper presented almost the same hydrocarbon composition found in adult female extracts.

摘要:
The paper describes the pattern of the flights associated with the nest digging inVespa ortientalis. The outgoing and return flights are performed perpendicularly to the wind direction, the arc is made with the wind and its length is almost constant. The possible role of these flights is discussed.

摘要:
Abundant literature references suggest that seeds, in order to increase their dispersal capacity, developed elaiosomes in order to attract the ants (myrmecochory). Ants have even been reported to consume the elaiosomes only and to carry the remaining seeds out of the nest. Under standard laboratory conditions, foragers ofMessor semirufus—a seed-harvesting ant species—do not discriminate between seeds of a myrmecochorous plant(Luzula multiflora)with elaiosomes and seeds from which the elaiosomes have been artificially removed. If confronted with an equal mass of seeds or of elaiosomes only, the ants regularly prefer the seeds. Elaiosomes glued to very light (≤ 5 mg), artificial seeds (styrofoam spheres coated with flour), elicited no transport into the nest among the ants. The same artificial seeds without elaiosomes but loaded with a 50 mg lead weight elicited a strong transport reaction.

摘要:
Using the slaveFornica cuniculariaas opponent, the aggressive behaviour of the slave-making ant speciesFormica sanguineaandPolyergus rufescenswas analysed and quantified by a laboratory pair test. The two species showed different fighting techniques. The facultative slave-makerF. sanguineaengaged in prolonged combats with the opponent and used the mandibles to kill it. By contrast, the obligatory slave-making speciesP. rufescensat first reacted only to the attack of the slave and probably used pheromones to stop the aggression ofF. cunicularia.Afterwards, if the attacks were repeated, it actively killed the slave with its mandibles. These data show the different degree of specialization reached by these two slave-makers in the evolutionary context of social parasitism.

摘要:
Newly eclosed workers of the facultative slave-making antFormica sanguineawere either exposed to homocolonial cocoons, exposed to cocoons of the common slaveFormica cunicularia, or reared without any cocoons. In all conditions, theF. sanguineaworkers later cared for both the homo—and heterospecific cocoons. This indicates that the early social environment does not influence cocoon recognition and acceptance in this species, and probably the choice of the host. Moreover, a strong tendency to care for cocoons of the slave species is also shown by adult workers of this slave-maker coming from a pure colony.

摘要:
The evolution of nucleolar material was followed during oogenesis inR. Iucifugusby the silver staining method. At pachytene several small nucleoli (micronucleoli) are dispersed between bivalents. At early diplotene the micronucleoli fuse into larger nucleoli. At late diplotene large masses of silver stainable material increase as an effect of the earlier rDNA amplification.

摘要:
Testes of larvae, nymphs, primary reproductives, pseudergates and soldiers ofK. flavicolliswere investigated with light and electron microscope. In the course of male gonad morphogenesis, at the apex of the testis lobes an apical tissue differentiates and persists even in the imago. In larvae, up to 4th instar, the lobes are made up of morphologically similar cells in which a distinction between somatic and germ cells is not possible. During transition from 4th to 5th larval instar, the lobes acquire the typical structure of the follicle testes of insects. In primary reproductives, the testes are voluminous and all four regions with peculiar patterns of germ cells differentiation increase their size. In pseudergates, nymphs and soldiers, although the stages of spermatogenesis and spermiogenesis are found, testes do not reach the size, structure and fully functional state of primary reproductives.
