摘要:
The longitudinal vibratory movements (LVMs) and the convulsive vibratory movements (CVMs) which occur inK. flavicollishave been studied. Both movements are predominantly performed by nymphs and pseudoergates with different frequencies depending on the caste ratio within the colony. Physical stimuli (such as light intensity variations and substrate vibrations), chemical (inorganic and organic compounds) and biological (individuals of other insect species) induced an increase in both movements, that is much higher for CVM than for LVM.

摘要:
The structure of gonads during normal development and in the sterile caste ofKalotermes flavicollis(Fabr.) was studied using light and electron microscope. The typical organization of the ovary is acquired between the 2nd and 3rd larval stage, and by the testis between the 4th and the 5th stages. Ovary development gradually advances up to the 5th larval stage; in 1st and 2nd stage nymphs, presoldiers, soldiers and pseudergates, oogenesis is blocked at the beginning of previtellogenesis with terminal oocyte degeneration. After the imaginal moult, terminal oocytes begin to store yolk. Spermatogenesis up to mature spermatozoa is already completed at the 5th larval stage. Mature spermatozoa are also observed in the testes of 1st and 2nd stage nymphs, presoldiers, soldiers and pseudergates. The testis reaches a maximum size and is fully functional in reproductives through an extensive recruitment of secondary spermatogonia.

摘要:
The SDS-PAGE electrophoretic mobility of total proteins from homogenates of castes of two lower termite species (Kalotermes flavicollisandReticulitermes lucifugus) and two upper ones (Nasutitermessp. andDicuspiditermes nemorosas) was studied.

摘要:
Laboratory observations on colonies ofParischnogaster alternataSakagami have revealed new aspects of the social behaviour of this species which it was not possible to observe in previous short-term studies conducted in the field.

摘要:
Two preliminary experiments onParischnogaster jacobsoniandLiostenogaster flavolineatatested the hypothesis that the secretion from Dufour's gland helps protect the immature brood, both when used to cover the eggs and as an ant guard. An indirect protective function of the secretion for eggs has been demonstrated in the second species, while when used as an ant guard the secretion of the first species efficiently repelled ants tested with a double choice device.

摘要:
In Stenogastrinae wasps male flight activity is centred on a set of landmarks, where males patrol and defend aerial territories from intruders, without perching or marking the substrate. Males perform a typical stripes-display in front of their rivals. In a group of captiveParischnogaster mellyimales, we analyzed the function of this behaviour by means of an experimental enlargement of the stripes-display.
