Cerebral infaretion currently is the third leading cause of death in the United States. Since atherosclerosis of the cerebral arteries is the basis for the majority of strokes, the authors undertook to define more accurately the distribution of such atherosclerosis, its relation to coronary atherosclerosis, and its relation to such other factors as hypertension, obesity, and cerebral infarction. The results of their study are presented here.

Continuous infusion of norepinephrine in man caused a rise in pulmonary arteriolar resistance as measured by pulmonary artery-pulmonary wedge pressure differences. Since no change in flow occurred during the procedures, the data suggest active constriction of the pulmonary vascular bed under these circumstances.

On the basis of 3 personal cases and 119 additional cases collected from the literature the difference between dextroversion and mirror-image dextrocardia is outlined. It is concluded that dextroversion is a part of an exceedingly primitive arrest in development that frequently includes other thoracic and abdominal organs as well as intracardiac structures. The defect is altogether different in embryogenesis and anatomic findings from mirror-image dextrocardia.

The behavior of serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase level in cases of dissecting aneurysm of the thoracic aorta is reported. Certain clinical and laboratory observations suggest that intrapericardial hemorrhage is the responsible factor when the titer of serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase is elevated.

From 1901 through 1932 arteriosclerosis was found in less than 3 per cent of autopsies on mammals and birds at the Philadelphia Zoological Garden, but thereafter its frequency has increased to about 20 per cent. This study has attempted to identify factors that may be associated with this change in frequency.

Interpretation of the meaning of a mean diastolic atrioventricular gradient or a mean systolic ventricular-great vessel gradient requires simultaneous determination of the level of the gradient, the heart rate, and the cardiac output. The feasibility of steady-state Fick principle cardiac output determination during combined right and left heart catheterization is investigated.

Alternation in the strength of left ventricular contractions was noted relatively frequently in patients with acquired aortic stenosis, but not in patients with congenital aortic stenosis of similar severity. The product of left ventricular systolic pressure and heart rate, an index of the myocardial oxygen requirement, was significantly higher in those patients who exhibited persistent pulsus alternans.

The thrombosis of the right renal artery following operative injury set off a chain of events closely duplicating the arterial hypertension observed by Goldblatt after constriction or occlusion of the renal arteries in experimental animals. The resulting hypertension was severe, fulminating, prolonged, and resistant to treatment by hypotensive and ganglion-blocking agents; it was associated with pulmonary edema, myocardial infarction, and impairment of the renal function. Nephrectomy brought about a return of the blood pressure to normal levels. The concentration of renin in the removed kidney was 34 times greater than normal.
