Lipid plaques in corneas of patients with lipid keratopathy, in corneas of hypercholesteremic rabbits and in the arteries of man and the hypereholesteremic rabbit are described. An interesting and thought-provoking analogy is drawn between the plaques that can be seen and followed in the eye during life with the more occult plaques of blood vessels in atheromatosis.

A new explanation for certain instances of acute reversible congestive phenomena in constrictive pericarditis is offered on the basis of 6 patients studied clinically and by right heart catheterization. In 2 cases intermittent tamponade in the presence of a rigid pericardium accounted for the reversibility of the congestive state, as contrasted with 4 cases presenting the chronic progressive course of classical constrictive pericarditis. The diagnosis in the 6 cases was proved by surgery or autopsy.

Progressive histologic changes occur in the pulmonary arteries and arterioles, as a complication of chronically elevated pulmonary arterial blood pressure, in patients with congenital septal defects of the heart. This progression is so stereotyped as to allow a division of the structural effects into 6 grades. The histologic features of each grade are described in detail in this communication. These results afford a basis for comparing the magnitude of these changes to the clinical findings.

Others have described mild or atypical myocardial infarction as a clinical condition in which the pain is of short duration and the evidence of tissue damage is slight. It occurs in otherwise healthy individuals and is characterized by complete recovery and the absence of complications. In this study the electrocardiograms of 359 patients with myocardial infarction were divided according to the QRS complexes; one group showing normal QRS complexes and the other showing typical Q waves. The clinical features of the patients in these two groups were compared.

Seventeen patients with late hemodynamic complications of anastomotic surgery for the tetralogy of Fallot have been studied. Two syndromes have been noted and both seem related to shunts of greater than ideal size. The clinical characteristics of these syndromes are delineated.

Attention is drawn to the occurrence of the nephrotic syndrome during chronic heart failure and to its reversibility over a period of months on a regimen of digitalis, lowsalt diet, and weekly, parenterally administered, mercurial diuretics. It is therefore concluded that the nephrotic syndrome was not caused by mercurial diuretics and is not a contraindication to their use. Reference is made to the poorly understood phenomenon of proteinuria in heart failure and its possible relationship to these cases.

The detailed electrocardiographic analysis of a large series of patients with proved, dynamic mitral regurgitation is lacking in the medical literature. The present report intends to fill the gap and to point out and discuss some discrepancies observed between the current concepts and the results of the study.

Little data have been accumulated regarding the contribution of regional volumes to the increased total blood volume observed in congestive heart failure. This report deals with the measurement of splanchnic blood volume in 12 patients in congestive heart failure compared with results obtained in 10 control subjects similarly studied.

Clinical and physiologic data before and after operation are presented in 2.5 patients who underwent surgical correction of congenital pulmonary stenosis with intact ventricular septum. Sixteen patients were operated on by the transventricular approach, 7 by the transarterial route, and 2 had infundibulectomies. Postoperative changes in the clinical status, phonocardiogram, electrocardiogram, x-rays, and right heart catheterization values are discussed. Comparison is made of the 2 major operative technics both in the present group and in cases gathered from a review of the literature.
